Rissi Palmer: History Making Country Musician Creating Black History at WeAreSeeds.net Posted on February 22, 2018August 19, 2021 By Dangerous Lee Rissi Palmer made music history in 2007 with the release of her Top 40 debut single, “Country Girl,” becoming the first African-American female to chart a country song since 1987. Photos by Jimmy Bruch We are becoming complacent with being ignorant Outside of being a musician, I am a parent and a teacher and one of my main focuses is making sure that we adults are equipping our children (especially children of color) emotionally and mentally for what this world will try to do to them. I work with young people who have an interest in songwriting and performing and try to help them develop their “voices” so they speak on their personal experiences. I started a blog last year called WeAreSeeds.net. So much of what’s wrong with our society is that we are becoming complacent with being ignorant. We can’t discuss the issues we face (i.e. racism, sexism, violence, etc) because we don’t really know much about them. I started WeAreSeeds.net to get the conversation started. I recommend books on various social justice topics, curate articles that help facilitate discussion and deeper analysis, post on ways to personally get involved with various causes, and interview people that are on the front lines of guiding our children. It Takes a Village I want WeAreSeeds.net to be a resource for parents and educators alike. I am working on expanding the blog in a podcast that parents and kids can listen to together that will have family friendly music, stories, and interviews centered around social justice. Finally, I am currently writing and recording a lullaby album for children with the theme of empowerment called Seeds for release later this year. I believe in providing art that enriches and entertainment. It truly does take a village to raise children and this is my contribution to the village.
