Ways To Promote Work-Life Balance at Your Workplace Posted on February 11, 2022February 11, 2022 By Leigh Langston As an entrepreneur, you’re no stranger to the grind lifestyle. You got where you are today through hard work, late nights, and building something with your blood, sweat, and tears. But sometimes, you focus so much on the grind that you forget to take care of yourself. And if you aren’t careful, that mindset can trickle down to your employees. Making sure your business is successful and healthy starts with finding ways to promote work-life balance at your workplace. Start With Employee Needs It’s easy to start blindly throwing remedies at your company to try to improve the culture. But if you want your methods to be effective, you have to start with what your employees need. And your employees are the best people to tell you what they need. There are dozens of ways to ask for direct feedback from your employees. You can host meetings or open forums where you discuss work-life balance in your company or send out surveys for people to give their feedback anonymously. Even after implementing changes, having an open-door policy as a boss will ensure you continue to receive feedback. Allow Flexible Work Schedules As trying as the pandemic has been, it has forced everyone to re-imagine the way they see their workdays. Because stay-at-home warnings have forced people to work from home, they’ve learned that their businesses can function with a remote workforce. And that idea can be a way to promote work-life balance at your workplace. If possible, see if you can establish a flexible schedule for your workforce. Allowing for a hybrid schedule where employees only come into the office part of the week will give employees a chance to sleep longer and catch up on things at home while still being productive. Promote Workday Boundaries When you have dedicated workers, it’s all too easy to ask them to go above and beyond the call of duty. After all, their willingness to work hard is the reason you hired them in the first place. However, it’s easy for even the best-intentioned business owners to slip into taking advantage of employees in this situation. To avoid this, try to promote workday boundaries for employees. Urge workers to not take work home if they’re able and not assign projects that will force them to work off the clock. Also, be sure to encourage workers to use their PTO, and encourage their co-workers (and yourself) not to call them when they’re out of the office. Create a Wellness Space Sometimes, you have to step away from your desk for a few minutes, even when you’re still on the clock. And if we have to, your employees do, too. And it’s important to communicate that it’s OK to do this. A simple way to do that is to design a dedicated wellness room in your workspace. This quiet space doesn’t have to be fancy, but having a place to step away may mean the world to your employees. Such an important topic–and well presented here. Here is a key piece of advice I share with my clients & workshop participants: every day–without fail–take time just for YOU. Even if you can spare just 30 minutes from your hectic schedule–do it. Put yourself first. Do something that brings you joy. Ask yourself, “what are MY hopes and dreams? MY goals and aspirations?” The best way to make sure you are productive and satisfied is to check in with yourself periodically to identify what you are most passionate about.
