How Black Moms Can Take Care of Their Children’s Mental Health Posted on April 28, 2020June 14, 2020 By Leigh Langston Mental health is one of the most important yet seldom discussed aspects of wellness. When it comes to Black children’s mental and emotional well-being, far more needs to be said. There comes a time in every Black child’s life when they realize that the world is different for them, society doesn’t treat everyone even-handedly and some folks have to work harder to do as well. It is especially important that Black moms play an active role in their children’s mental wellness to create and maintain a healthy sense of self-worth throughout life. The following are three ways to establish that sense of wellness in your children. Talk Openly Wellness really does start at home. It is paramount that your children feel safe to talk to you about their mental state. Equipping them with the vocabulary needed to express themselves is an excellent starting point. Allowing your kids to discuss their emotions as you respond with kindness and understanding is a great way to create a strong foundation of trust at home. According to DocDoc, if you aren’t sure how to start, it’s okay to reach out to get advice on mothering your children. Therapy The negative connotations therapy has for some people are totally unfounded. Therapy can be an incredibly helpful tool when it comes to your child’s mental health, and it isn’t always just sitting in a doctor’s office, talking to a stranger about your feelings. Take, for example, equine therapy. Instead of lying on a couch, talking to a doctor in a clinical setting, kids are encouraged to get around animals. According to Renewed Hope Ranch, working with animals such as horses can be a powerful therapy method. Encouraging a child to express their feelings through either traditional or alternative therapy can create a sense of self-worth that is crucial for navigating the world, especially if that child is black. Lead by Example You are your child’s first teacher. In terms of mental health, they will see what you do for yourself and others, and they’ll probably follow suit. In order to raise children who are mentally and emotionally stable, you must take care of yourself and show them what it is to be emotionally balanced. A Fine Parent says that modeling mental wellness will demonstrate to your child that you value yourself and that, in turn, they should do the same. If you go to therapy, take them with you now and then to show that it is a normal aspect of wellness. Go on walks with your little ones and talk to them. They will appreciate it in the long run. Taking care of your child’s mental health is no small feat, but by taking small, proactive steps, you can ensure that your children are equipped for a healthy life.
