How Black Moms Can Promote Confidence in Their Kids Posted on January 12, 2020January 12, 2020 By Leigh Langston One of the biggest confidence boosters is being able to see people who look like you being labeled as successful, beautiful, et cetera. From magazines to television programs that your child watches, seeing themselves represented in a positive light can have a huge impact on how they see themselves. However, finding this representation in major media outlets may sometimes prove to be a bit difficult. This is why it is so important for you to build that confidence within your child so that they may go into the world with their self-esteem high. If you are new to motherhood or just unsure of how to go about it, here are some tips to help you promote confidence in your little one. Be Active According to Responsive Classroom, you should always speak positively to your children so that these affirmations may be embedded in their psyche. Positive affirmations such as, “Good job,” especially for their actions can do wonders. This is especially true for actions that they have control over. Telling your child how handsome, smart or beautiful they are will help in the short term, but these are things they don’t have control over. Telling them that they are beautiful because of their kindness and generosity is a great way to give them control over their own beauty. As a parent, your child’s confidence begins with how you interact with them so be very thoughtful in what you say and do. Start Young According to Kneebouncers, when kids are younger, one of the best confidence builders is play. It encourages communication, as well as physical activity and teaches them that if they work hard they can succeed at what they try. Activities that you can do with your child when they are very young, such as building blocks or coloring, provide an opportunity to bond. It also allows you to give them positive affirmations. Let their imaginations take the lead; being in control of their imaginary word is great for their mental health. Be a Mirror As a parent, you are the first and most important role model that your child will ever come across. Children often imitate and want to be like their parents, therefore, it is important that you exhibit the traits that you want to instill in your child. If your child sees that you are confident, that will help them to be confident as well. Children are very visual learners, so be sure that the image you are projecting in front of them is a positive one. The best way to have your child be anything whether that be brave, honest, or confident, is for you to be those things yourself. Even if you don’t feel so confident at times or may even be dealing with depression, you may find that the more you put on a smile for your child’s sake as well as speak positivity to them, the confidence that grows inside of them will be contagious and may even help you as well.
