What Black Women Need to Know About Getting Into the Entertainment Business Posted on April 27, 2020December 12, 2022 By Leigh Langston Breaking into the entertainment industry is not easy, especially for Black women. Lately, however, there have been more and more opportunities for Black women to succeed in entertainment — all you need are the right resources. Here are three things you should know as a Black woman looking to break into the entertainment business. Experience and Skills Getting into the entertainment business makes you an entrepreneur. You are the CEO of your own business, and you also happen to be the ‘product’ that your business is selling. The good news is that Black women are in high demand in the entertainment industry. Given increasing competitiveness, it could help your business if you get some type of higher education in entertainment. There are several skills you can learn with an entertainment business degree that will really help you as you pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Having this knowledge can prevent you from getting scammed and allow you to make the best deals possible on your own behalf. Network Yourself You’ve probably heard this saying: “It’s not what you know; it’s who you know.” This maxim is true in the entertainment industry. You should research all the heavy hitters in the business and become familiar with what they’re looking for (especially those seeking Black female entertainers) in case you ever run into one of them. Attend as many workshops, meetings, functions and events as you can so you can meet other people in the industry. Remember to make great and lasting first impressions. It’s a small world and there is a good chance you’ll run into these people again. The most important thing is to be approachable so they’ll want to work with you instead of running the other way. Grab Every Opportunity Whether you’re a singer, rapper, model, actress or another type of artist, you should always look for opportunities. Starting out, it can be hard for Black women to find these opportunities, so don’t let any pass you by. It doesn’t matter how big or how small these opportunities are. You never know who may see you or what good fortune could come from a small event or a little part. Even if they don’t pay much, these smaller opportunities can help you network and teach you valuable, on-the-job lessons. Breaking into the industry is hard, but once you’ve got your foot in the door, keep pushing your way in. Use these tips to set yourself up for success. Before you know it, you’ll be on your way into the spotlight. Ready to show the world what you’ve got? Click here for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to elevate your voice and be heard!
