Helpful Tips for Becoming the Beautiful Black Leader You Were Meant to Be Posted on April 20, 2021April 20, 2021 By Leigh Langston As a Black woman, you’ve likely faced many challenges. However, that doesn’t have to stop you from becoming a powerful leader. Being a leader is a wonderful opportunity and with the right tips, you can gain qualities that will make you a great one. Be Passionate If you want to inspire change, then you need to have passion. Being passionate is highly beneficial to you and those who follow you. On your end, passion can help to give you drive. If you care about what you’re doing, then you’re likely to put more effort into it and do everything to see it through. Similarly, if the people following you see your passion, then they will be more inspired as well. No one wants to follow someone who doesn’t believe in their own vision. Show others what you care about and why you care about it and they will be urged to care as well. Pay Attention As a leader, you can’t just do everything on your own and make decisions for everyone. You need to also be invested in the people you work with. You need to pay attention to what they have to say. People will be more likely to follow your leadership if they feel they are heard by you. They will be more confident in your abilities and your decisions. To top it all off, you can make informed decisions because you know what’s going on. As a part of paying attention, you need to use active listening. Listen to people with the intent of understanding and not just to respond. The average attention span has decreased by roughly four seconds over the last twenty years. This has made paying attention and listening more challenging for the average individual. You’ll need to make an extra effort to really pay attention and to show it as well. Repeat back what people have said to make sure you understood them properly and have a discussion about any concerns they have. Lead By Example Another way to be a strong leader is to set an example for others. Don’t just tell people what they should be doing. You need to do it along with them. Show people you aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty. This type of leadership inspires others to follow you because they can know you aren’t just using them for their efforts. Additionally, as you display positive behaviors and the behaviors you are expecting, people will be more likely to emulate them. You can become a role model to your followers. Encourage and Recognize Others When it comes down to it, being a leader is all about the people you are leading. You need to build a strong community with them. Encourage people to push harder and work towards their goals. When someone does something well, give them recognition and praise. Most importantly, you should welcome others’ contributions. Show them that they matter to you and that you are all a team. As a Black leader, you can effect a lot of change. You can become an example to others and show how much of an impact black women can have. With the right tools, you can become the beautiful Black leader you were always meant to be.
