3 Summertime Activities Black Families Can Use to Strengthen Bonds Posted on July 15, 2019July 15, 2019 By Leigh Langston Summers are the best times for families to “reboot” and strengthen their bonds. Even though the parents are still working, having the kids off from school provides a sense of time off. How that time will be spent can have a positive impact on your family. Do you have your summertime plans locked down? Organize a Family Reunion When thinking about how you can strengthen the bonds of your family, you should be thinking about the entire family. A family reunion is a terrific opportunity to get everyone together outside of the hectic pressure of the holidays. A summertime family reunion can be a simple event at a park such as a family barbecue, or it can be a weekend getaway where the families rent vacation cottages to spend time together. Even though you might be the one pulling the reunion together, you don’t have to do it all alone. Delegating tasks and sharing in the cooking and cleanup will get everyone involved and make for a stress-free reunion. Family Road Trip Some of the best fun for the whole family can be found on a road trip adventure. That starts by picking a destination. This could be a spot that requires a few days of travel. That will mean setting up overnight stays in hotels along the way. Those are always fun for the kids especially if they can have their own room and order up room service. Everybody loves room service. When plotting out the trip, you can also allow each member of the family to pick their “adventure of the day.” That could be a roadside attraction they want to visit or an activity that the family hasn’t tried. Just be sure the car is tuned up and that you take turns driving. As long as you follow some basic safety tips, it can be a fun and safe trip. Volunteer One of the most strengthening experiences you can have as a family is to volunteer together. Whether you volunteer through a church mission or find an organization to spend a day giving back, you will be teaching your kids a valuable lesson. This is the type of experience that can build a foundation of caring in them that will last a lifetime. The summertime is a great time to get together with your family and strengthen your bond. Whatever summertime activity you take on be sure to take plenty of videos and photos. These will be the memories that your family will be sharing around the dinner table for years to come.
