What Black Mothers Should Know About Making Their Homes More Self-Sufficient Posted on December 2, 2019September 18, 2023 By Leigh Langston Rising food prices and concern about unhealthy diets have boosted public interest in alternative lifestyles that allow families to grow their own food. For Black mothers interested in creating a more nurturing life for their families, becoming more self-sufficient provides a wealth of enriching opportunities. This lifestyle offers access to organic, homegrown food; instills positive values in children; and provides the whole family with a chance to spend quality time together. Don’t assume you need to live on a large country farm to apply the principles of self-sufficiency. Even a humble backyard can become an incredible resource for families, whether it’s raising a small flock of chickens or growing vegetables. There are many different interpretations of how to become more self-sufficient. It’s all about using what you have to make your home more supportive of independent living. You Shouldn’t Go It Alone The best way to make sure your project for self-sufficiency succeeds is to get the whole family excited about it. Cultivating a garden will be a lot of work for just one person and be harder to maintain in the long run. More importantly, if Mom is the only one invested in this lifestyle, your family misses out on many of the benefits. You might be surprised by how much working together as a family can be a fun bonding experience that promotes important values for children. They learn critical thinking skills from closely observing nature and the trial-and-error process of trying to grow vegetables. Getting to enjoy the fruits of their labor with delicious meals that feature home-grown veggies will encourage a sense of pride and satisfaction in working hard. It’s Easier Than Ever The great news about pursuing self-sufficiency in the modern world is that there’s so much innovative technology available to support your goals. The growing interest in homegrown food has led businesses to come up with a range of creative solutions for urban homesteaders interested in raising chickens or gardening. Modern chicken coops look a lot different than you might think. You can also make the most of a small space with self-sufficiency tools like solar-powered grow lights and timed irrigation systems. The best kind of soil is full of nutrients, and there are many innovative composting systems on the market to help you enrich your garden naturally. Once it’s time to harvest, preserve your homegrown foods until you need them by using essential tools like a dehydrator and a pressure canner. Make Use of Every Resource As your family begins this journey, take advantage of the wealth of information available to guide your efforts in becoming more self-sufficient. Head to your local library, and you’ll find in-depth guides on growing seasons, dealing with pests, helping chickens thrive, and many other self-sufficiency principles. The internet is itself a library of information, and there are countless YouTube channels, forums, blogs, and articles devoted to sharing valuable information about living a more independent lifestyle. Make learning an integral part of the process for the entire family by discussing what you have learned, and put it into practice together. Start Small Whether your ambition is to grow all your family’s food or just a small portion, work towards self-sufficiency with baby steps. Manageable tasks will help you not get overwhelmed as you learn about this new lifestyle. Start an herb garden on a window planter, or use artificial light if you don’t have good sunlight. Growing herbs is simple because they require little water or maintenance and mature very quickly. Next, try placing a larger planter outside and grow some tomatoes. Continue researching as a family in choosing what self-sufficiency projects interest you. Build from there, and use the motivation of enjoying your fresh herbs and tomatoes to push forward into more self-sufficiency. Make a Plan Once you’ve learned more about the self-sufficiency lifestyle, figure out what your family wants to pursue. Take into account your resources, how much space you have and your family’s interests. What are your main goals and priorities? Is it saving money or eating more organic? Is it access to fresh eggs and poultry? Make a list, and then take on more projects to accomplish the level of self-sufficiency that works for your family. Build More Skills As you develop your taste for becoming independent, branch out into new ways to produce the things your family needs. Making homemade soap can be incredibly rewarding as well as being much cheaper and potentially healthier than the store-bought kind. The ingredients are straightforward, and there’s a wealth of tutorials online to help guide you. Recruit your kids to help you make your own bread, and enjoy the incredibly fresh taste of a freshly baked loaf. Move on to making your own nut butter and learning to make fresh ice cream. Try to Live With Less The self-sufficient lifestyle is all about relying on your own skills and effort to save money and gain access to better quality products. But independence also includes buying less unnecessary things. Encourage everyone in your family to be conscious of their shopping habits as a way of supporting your self-sufficiency goals. It’s also helpful to declutter your space of items that don’t serve a purpose by selling or donating whatever you don’t need. Your money, time and space should be spent on the things that matter. Focus on Your Family In today’s fast-paced world, creating the space to pursue wholesome self-sufficiency goals will help your family reduce stress, encourage a healthier lifestyle and build a stronger bond. There are many small joys to be found just from working side by side, going out to get supplies, researching different aspects of self-sufficiency and getting together to make important decisions. Use this project as a way to bring your family closer and strengthen your core values. To get started incorporating some elements of self-sufficiency into your life, gather the whole family together to talk about this important new goal.
