Beautifully Black: Quick Tips on Caring for Your Unique Skin and Hair Posted on September 18, 2019July 8, 2024 By Leigh Langston Each person’s skin and hair will respond differently to skincare and hair products, so it’s important to personalize your beauty routine. To find the most effective skincare and hair products for your needs as a beautiful Black woman, consider the tips outlined below. Watch Out for Harmful Ingredients Your skin functions as the all-important barrier against environmental pollutants, which is why it’s essential to keep it healthy and happy. Using skincare products that work to benefit your skin rather than harm it is essential to supporting the health of your largest organ. Regardless of skin type or texture, it’s important to be mindful of the ingredients your skincare products contain. Harsh chemicals tend to dry the skin and make it more sensitive to environmental factors. While there are many different opinions about the use of skin bleaching products, it’s important to understand the possible side effects that such products can have on your skin. Many bleaching products contain toxic ingredients, including mercury. There is also a risk of stinging, skin irritation and crusting from the use of skin-bleaching products, and the creams increase a patient’s sensitivity to the sun. Pay close attention to the ingredients and possible side effects of any new beauty treatment you try. Remember that there are toners, serums and face oils that can enhance your natural beauty—without all the chemicals. Moisturize Smart Black women often need to use rich moisturizers so that the skin does not become ashy or flaky. Both cocoa butter and shea butter are effective choices, and many women find that face oils feel soothing to the skin. Hemp oil improves skin health and reduces skin problems like eczema. In addition, argan oil and coconut oil may be beneficial, too. When trying out a new moisturizer, always be sure to test the product by applying a small amount to the inside of your wrist. Check the spot for dryness or irritation after 24 hours. If no irritation develops, it is safe to apply the moisturizer to your face and body. The same butters and oils that work for skincare are also ideal for moisturizing the hair. To avoid damage, look for organic shampoos and conditioners that are free of sulfates; these detergents can exacerbate dryness and cause irritation. Be Careful With Heat and Relaxers Black hair can be especially prone to injury, and many Black women worry about hair thinning and hair loss. To reduce this risk, dermatologists recommend washing hair once a week or once every other week. Additionally, a product that protects the hair from heat damage should be applied before using hair straighteners or curling irons. Ideally, ceramic straighteners and irons should be used, and these should be set to the lowest possible temperature that produces the desired style. Heated straighteners or curlers should only be used once a week. Hair relaxers need to be applied by professionals, and they should never be applied to hair that has already been relaxed. Any necessary touch-ups should be done on newly grown hair at intervals of two or three months. By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to finding a personalized skin and hair routine that fits with your lifestyle. Keep experimenting with new products, and always ask a dermatologist if you notice any unexplained changes to your skin or hair. Interested in learning more?
