Things Mothers Can Do to Help Their Children Stay Safe Online Posted on April 5, 2021January 2, 2022 By Leigh Langston Being online is something that can’t be avoided anymore. It’s often required for school or work or even socializing. However, there are valid safety concerns that parents have when it comes to allowing their children online. You must take steps to keep them safe. Set Ground Rules If you want your kids to stay safe, according to Psych Central, then you first need to establish some ground rules. The best way to do this is to involve your children in the process. Have a discussion with them about certain rules that you think will keep them safe. Be willing to have a conversation about your reasoning behind the rules as well as the fairness of them. Involving your children in the discussion also ensures that they understand the rules clearly. Another important thing to remember is consistency. You need to follow through with the consequences of breaking the rules and establish that the ground rules will be followed. Lastly, make sure you encourage your children when they follow the rules instead of only pointing out when they break the rules. Let Them Know They Can Come to You with Anything When online, it’s likely your children will come across things that will make them feel upset or uncomfortable. In these types of situations, your children might feel ashamed and won’t want to bring it up. You need to show them that they can come to you with any concerns they may have. Their behavior is often shaped by your past reactions, so if you want them to feel comfortable coming to you then you should avoid overreacting or making them feel at fault. Encourage discussion with your children. Use these circumstances as a teaching moment. It can be dangerous for children to avoid talking with their parents since there is so much addictive content. According to Fight the New Drug, addictions don’t care what demographics you belong to or how old you are. They can be detrimental to your children. This is why you need to catch them early by encouraging your children to feel comfortable talking to you. Emphasize Privacy On many websites, especially social media sites, children may be encouraged to share private information. To them, it might not seem like a good idea. According to the National Cybersecurity Alliance, you must teach your children early about the importance of protecting your privacy. Tell them not to share their location, birthday, or other identifying information. The internet can be a dangerous place but also a useful tool which is why you can’t completely prevent your children from using it. Instead, work with them to create ways to keep them safe. Teach them well and encourage a loving and comfortable environment. Read this next: What Black Mothers Need to Know About the Dangers of Youth Football Like this:Like Loading...
