How to Thrive Academically When You Go Back to School Posted on May 12, 2022February 3, 2024 By Leigh Langston Going back to school is a big adjustment for everyone. Everyone remembers the end of summer as kids, and making that difficult transition. However, if you haven’t been back to school in quite a while, this transition can be even trickier. These are a few things you can do to help you thrive as you go back to school. Take the Time to Study If it’s been a while since you last stepped into a classroom, studying might not come as naturally to you as it once did. Getting back into the swing of academics takes a lot of hard work, and taking time to study is one of the most important aspects of that. Studying helps you stay on top of your schoolwork, and helps you perform better academically. To have the best study routines, there are several essential steps: first, keep track of every assignment and its due date. A planner or online calendar can be a helpful tool for this. Next, set aside time every day when you work on your school work. Try to keep this time free from distractions, and stay focused. Studying will help you succeed more than anything, so it’s essential to make it a habit. Find a Balance Going back to school as an adult is a lot different than school as a teenager. You have new responsibilities as an adult that you didn’t have back then, which can make balancing everything even more difficult. Online classes have much more flexibility if you have a job and family responsibilities. Many prestigious programs offer online or hybrid degree options to help you find that balance. They are also a great option because you can complete them on your own time, so you’ll be able to work around your already busy schedule. Whatever option you choose, make sure you focus on balance. School can be all-consuming, and it’s easy to get burnt out. Make sure to take time for yourself. Ask for Help The good part about going back to school as an adult is that you have a great support system. Friends, family, and neighbors can all help with some of your other responsibilities while you’re in school. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If your support system at home isn’t thriving, there are many people on campus that would love to help you. Guidance counselors can help you decide which classes will work with your schedule, and how to balance coursework. Professors are usually willing to talk to you and help you through difficult projects and assignments. Asking for help will get you much further than doing things on your own. Going back to school as an adult is tricky. A lot has changed in your life since you were last in school, and figuring out how to succeed in your new role can be difficult. Keep these tips in mind, and reach out to other adults in school to see any advice they may have. College not for you? Check out this article on at-home hobbies you can turn into a career!
