4 Tips for First-Generation College Students Posted on July 23, 2021December 4, 2021 By Leigh Langston College is a goal for many young people today, yet not everyone comes from a family that stresses education. This situation can be even harder if a child is the first in their family to go to college. If that’s the case, here are some tips for first-generation college students that will help you navigate the hurdles of college life before you start and while you’re there. Find a Resource Group Colleges and universities are some of the best places to meet new friends, academic advisors, and professors. It’s also a great way to network your potential academic and career pathways. Use the time between high school and college or between your years at college to branch out and meet new people. These networking opportunities will help establish future relations that can benefit career or academic opportunities. Additionally, many colleges and universities have social groups where you can meet new friends or like-minded individuals. Find a Black Student Alliance or related group to meet other young first-generation black college students and o build a strong foundation at your college. Hire an Admissions Consultant You might also benefit from hiring an admissions consultant. When you want to go to undergrad, law school, graduate school, or medical school, an admissions consultant offers the resources you need to finalize your career. Getting into an undergraduate program is already stressful, but pursuing a graduate or professional degree adds another layer of mental and financial anxiety for first-generation students. Fortunately, an admissions consultant streamlines the application process. Research Financial Aid Opportunities With rising student debt today, it’s no wonder that many people have trouble affording college. Another great tip for first-generation college students is to research any potential financial aid options. Many federal and private scholarship opportunities are available for young Black women, such as AACP, Blacks at Microsoft, EPP Undergraduate scholarship, Historically Underrepresented Groups (HUGS), NACME Scholars, the Jackie Robinson Foundation, and many more. Research and apply for these scholarships to help offset the financial burden of tuition, textbooks, and supplies. Believe In Yourself as a First-Generation College Student At last, remember to believe in yourself. It’s natural to internalize a little pressure with being the first in your family to go to college, specifically as a young Black woman. You might even be the first in your entire neighborhood to attend college. Either way, relax. Do not let the pressure build up. If you need to, reach out and talk to friends, family, or community members for advice. It’s on you to build the future you want for yourself, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have fun with it. Breathe, eat, sleep, and relax while maintaining a balanced class and study schedule. Like this:Like Loading...
