If They Can Get Media Exposure, So Can You! Posted on November 12, 2021April 22, 2024 By Nikki Curry Let’s be clear; everything is not newsworthy. Just because something is important to you doesn’t mean it will be attractive to the media. Here is a hard truth; the media is rarely interested in promoting an individual, a service, or product during a news broadcast or print publication. But, honestly, that is what a media outlet’s marketing and advertising department paid to do. It is called (Paid Media), and there is nothing wrong with it at all. Here are 3- Ways To Become Attractive To The Media Make Your Story Pitch Interesting- Give the chosen media outlet something that will make their audience go “WOW! I didn’t know that”! Something along the lines of “5 Ways To ____” or “3-Day Checklist To Get All Of Your Holiday Shopping Done”. Keep in mind, a good “Aha Moment” to strangers can go a long way with an audience that learns something from your guest appearance or interview.Don’t Pitch You; Pitch The Problem– Never try to get the media’s attention with you in mind. Again, they don’t care about you; they care about their audience. Come from a place as a problem solver. Find a way to focus on what problem your product, service, or message solves. What happens after they experience the company services or use your new product? Do you have testimonials or case studies that can back up what you say?Add-on To The Media- Unfortunately, one of the most under-used methods of attracting the media is not to tie a specific topic into what the media has already reported. The media is always looking for subject matter experts to add value or give a different perspective to a story. Indeed, you have seen the media reporting on stories for days at a time? It seems as though every time we turn on the TV, radio, and even on social media, we hear the same stories, just a different perspective from another group of people. In my industry, we call this news jacking. It works! In closing, don’t be afraid to approach the media with your recommendations, results, or strategies. But keep in mind; make sure these methods are something that can help their overall audiences. If you would like to focus on you specifically and what you’re offering, take out an ad with the media outlet of your choice.
