How to Take Care of Your Skin During the Winter Posted on January 11, 2022March 20, 2024 By Leigh Langston During the winter, your skin is especially prone to dryness. The cold, dry air can leave your skin itchy, red, and irritated. Combined with the change between dramatic temperatures or indoor and outdoor settings, your skin has a difficult time retaining moisture. Take care of your skin during the winter by moisturizing daily, avoiding hot water, and drinking lots of water. Moisturize Daily The winter air naturally sucks away so much moisture from your skin. It is important to help supplement your skin with extra moisture during the cold months. You should create a habit of moisturizing daily. After you bathe, pat your skin dry with a towel. Immediately following, moisturize your skin with a rich cream or oil-based moisturizer. These will be more effective than lotions in keeping moisture sealed in your skin. Moisturize throughout the day after running your hands under water or as needed. Avoid Too Much Hot Water Certainly, when it is cold outside, taking a hot shower sounds like the perfect remedy. Unfortunately, hot showers and hot water in general are an enemy to your skin. Hot water dries out your skin by stripping it of its natural oils. Hot water often has hard water particles that make their way into your faucet. Mineral deposits can be damaging to your skin. Hard water also puts stress on your plumbing. As a rule, if the water causes your skin to turn red, it is too hot. Washing your hands in cooler water is still effective at removing germs and is less irritating to your skin. Brief, lukewarm shower will also be much better for your body. Drink Lots of Water When it is cold outside, we often forget to drink enough water throughout the day. Moisturizing your skin from the inside out will make a huge impact on your skin’s ability to retain moisture. Even if you are not thirsty, drink water. Little sips throughout the day from a bottle that lets you track your progress will make the task more manageable. You can also mix winter teas such as natural ginger and lemon into your drink rotation. These will help you feel healthy, hydrated, and cozy all at the same time! Establishing healthy routines is vital to looking and feeling your best. Take time to take care of yourself.
