How to Promote Safe Driving at Work Posted on March 5, 2021December 13, 2022 By Dangerous Lee When putting drivers on the road, it’s the responsibility of your company to make sure that you are putting responsible individuals in charge of vehicles. Failing to do so can result in unsafe driving that can cause collisions, damages, and injury. To avoid the potential of disaster, your company needs to know the proper ways for how to promote safe driving at work. Check Employee Driving History Just like checking a worker’s employment history, it’s a necessity to look into an employee’s driving history. It’s common practice to have potential drivers fill out their professional and personal driving records and take note of speeding violations, traffic or parking infractions, and history of collisions. Zero-Tolerance Policy When it comes to safety on the road, there is no room for error or allowances. You must screen potential drivers and rule out any who have a history of unsafe driving; they will only be a liability to the company. Offer Training While an employee may come into the company with a satisfactory record, they may still require formal training to guarantee safe driving. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) offers three work-related safety practices: Stay Focused – Avoid all distractions while driving; this means refrain from adjusting the vehicle radio and other unnecessary controls, and avoid eating, drinking, and using a cell phone.Avoid Aggressive Driving – Do not become mad while driving on the road. Be patient with other drivers and do not take their actions personally. Stay Safe – Wear your seatbelt at all times and come to work well-rested and alert. Do not take medications that will make you drowsy before getting behind the wheel. Know how to handle hazardous road conditions such as hydroplaning and environmental factors. Ensure Vehicles Are Maintained Beyond what the driver must do to maintain safe driving, as the business owner, it’s your responsibility to make sure the vehicles are safe for the drivers to operate. Having tires that are worn, oil that hasn’t been changed, and failing suspension systems will lead to vehicle breakdowns and can result in accidents. Everyone Must Do Their Part By promoting safe driving practices at work through policy, training, and proper maintenance, you can greatly reduce the possibility of collisions and dangerous situations for everyone involved.
