How to Make Your House More Like a Home Posted on September 23, 2021October 21, 2023 By Leigh Langston When you first move into your house, it can take some time to make it feel like the space is really your own, especially if you are just starting to cultivate your furniture collection. But, making the effort to turn your living space into a real home can help you to feel more comfortable and decompress after a long day at work. There are many things you can do to start making your house feel like a home, and here are a few of the most important. Add Personal Touches The first step in making your house a home is starting to personalize the space a bit. While it can be tempting to simply emulate the things a magazine suggests, it is important to inject some of your own personality into the mix. This can be done in a variety of ways, whether it is in the colors you choose to paint each room, the unique furniture pieces you find, or the accessories you use to brighten up the blank spaces on your walls. As you are designing your space, remember that it should look the way you want it to, and that will help you cultivate a look for your own home. Buy Comfortable Furniture While there is certainly a place and a time for fancy stilted furniture, when you are creating a home, comfort is key. Look for furniture pieces that help you feel at home and give you a sense of relaxation. Soft couches and comfy chairs can come together to make a living space that is inviting and welcoming, whether you have guests over or are simply enjoying a night at home alone. Your bedroom furniture should also be comfortable and create a feeling of calm and relaxation so you can decompress and get good rest each night. Keep it Clean A little bit of clutter isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but when your mess gets out of control, it can be a major problem for your home. A messy space can feel unwelcoming and even a little bit hostile, especially when you come home to it after a stressful day at work. Keeping things organized and making sure there is a spot for everything can help your home to feel more like home and make it easier to keep it clean. It can even be helpful to have a schedule for yourself so that you have a specific time to take care of certain kinds of tasks each week. Clear Clutter If your clutter is starting to take over your home, it is time to clear some of it out and work on making things look and feel better. Sometimes the problem is simply that you don’t have the storage space to keep things clutter-free. This is a problem that has a pretty simple solution of simply building in more storage space. In your kitchen, for example, new cabinets can give you more room which can help you love your kitchen again. When you build in more storage, you make your space more usable and make cleaning a little bit easier on yourself so you don’t have to live with more clutter than you can handle. Get Some Plants There is something about adding fresh greenery to a space that helps it to feel much homier. Some people are nervous about getting plants because they worry they won’t know how to care for them. If that is something you are worried about, talk to your local nursery and learn about plants that are low maintenance and easy to care for. Then as you get more skilled and confident as a plant owner, you can try out plants that require a little bit more care. Whatever plants you choose will help your space feel like your own. Invest in Your Bedroom You will likely spend a lot of time in your bedroom, so it deserves an investment of both time and money. Work to cultivate a bedroom space that is comfortable and inviting and that you are happy to spend time in each day. This means choosing blankets and bedding that you like to look at and that feel good on your skin. Your bedroom should be a space where you feel secure and comfortable. Take time to carefully choose each item for your bedroom so that the space comes together and welcomes you in. Invite Guests to Visit It’s not just the things you put into your house that make it feel like home, it is also the people you bring into your space. If you never have visitors over, it can make your house feel empty and unwelcoming. So, if you are looking to feel more at home in your house, consider hosting a party or even just having a couple of friends over. Their presence in your space will automatically make it feel homier and more welcoming. Share a meal and some laughter in your house and watch as it transforms into a home right before your eyes. Get a Pet Sometimes all you need is a little bit of company to finally make your house feel like your true home. A pet can be a great option that instantly warms your space and makes you feel better. Depending on your lifestyle and needs, there are a variety of pets that you should consider. Dogs and cats are classic pets that many people enjoy, but there are other options as well. Bunnies and hedgehogs can be great pets that are often lower maintenance than larger pets. Whichever pet you choose, make sure that you learn about their care so that you can make your home into the best home it can be for both of you. Your home should be a place where you are comfortable and happy. And a lot of that comes from the work you do to help create your space as something that you enjoy spending time in. As you work to cultivate your home you will start feeling more comfortable and excited about the space you live in.
