How to Form Better Relationships With Your Family Posted on May 14, 2021October 3, 2023 By Leigh Langston Your family will be connected to you for your entire life. Having good relationships with them will help you enjoy your time with them and create lasting bonds. However, creating these bonds isn’t always easy, so it’s important to learn positive ways to form better relationships. Set Aside Time With Them If you want to have a good relationship with someone, you need to spend time with them. This time is what allows you to get to know by hearing their stories, learning about their personality, and getting to know how they interact with others. To form a positive relationship, it’s a good idea to set aside time specifically for individual family members. Doing so demonstrates to them that you care and are willing to give up your own time for them. If you want to make the most of this time, you should allow them to choose an activity for you to do together. Overall, there are many benefits of spending time with family. Give a Personal Gift When you buy a gift for your family member, it makes them feel appreciated and it shows that you were thinking of them. The best gifts are personal ones. You can buy something that references an inside joke, you can make a gift yourself, or you can get something that directly relates to the receiver. For example, you can personalize jewelry so then your family member has something special, but also unique. One way to personalize jewelry is to get the person’s birthstone. Whatever you get for your loved one, the gift should indicate your affection for them. Improve Communication Many family issues are actually rooted in poor communication. If you take time to work on your communication skills and encourage your family to do the same, you can form more positive relationships with each other. The skill most people are lacking is effective listening. First, remove distractions and give others your full attention. Listen with the intent of understanding their side rather than responding to them. When it’s your turn to speak, share your feelings and avoiding accusing or attacking. Rather than telling someone they make you angry instead say you are feeling angry. Encourage your family to share their feelings, especially if something is bothering them. Having good relationships with your family is important because it can help you all provide love and support for each other. You can’t force others to make changes, but you can take steps to improve your relationships. Start now to form better bonds with your family.
