3 Ways Black Women Can Start Their Career Without a Degree Posted on April 10, 2020September 15, 2024 By Leigh Langston College degrees are no longer a requirement to achieve the American dream. We live in an economy where people are finding ways to have great careers, live well, and avoid college debt like the plague. Here are three ways that Black women can start their career without a degree. Alternative Education Paths Let’s face it – college is expensive and in today’s job market, it’s not always the practical choice financially. However, there are programs available that will allow you to certify in a field. According to My Absolute Beauty, a professional certificate can give you more legitimacy with potential clients. It teaches you the most important knowledge in each field without all the extra “general education” courses. With a certificate, clients and employers will know that you’re familiar with the main components of a career. Put Yourself Out There Social media has become one of the biggest marketing tools of the century. This includes marketing yourself for a new career. According to Job-Hunt, LinkedIn is the number one best social media resource you can use for career hunting. In fact, it was designed for the purpose of linking professionals all over the globe. Facebook is the second-best social media resource. Make sure you keep your profile and posts professional. Employers will also use these sites as a part of the screening/background check. Start Your Own Business There are so many opportunities to start a successful small business and all you have to do is grab them. In fact, according to the Black EOE Journal, Black female-owned businesses are on the rise with close to three million firms being owned by Black women. If you don’t know anything about starting a business, you could revisit the advice in the first tip and get a certificate in Business or Management. It will teach you pertinent information like taxes, payroll, marketing, and more. Once you have that knowledge under your belt, the sky’s the limit. Just make sure you do a fair amount of research in whichever market you decide to enter. Having a college degree is helpful and if you are able and willing, it doesn’t hurt to pursue one. However, it’s not necessary to have a college degree in order to have a great career.
