4 Cost-Saving Ideas for the Black Woman Business Owner Posted on June 6, 2019February 24, 2020 By Leigh Langston As a Black woman, you have dealt with many obstacles in your life. However, you have learned how to accomplish a great deal through grit and determination. You take those same principles and you daily apply them to your business. Like every other business owner, your business is your baby. You want to watch it grow through all its different stages—from infancy to adulthood. But just like there are a number of things you should do to help a young child, there are also many things you need to do to help your business reach this last stage. One of the main things you should do is to always be on the lookout for cost-saving measures. Here are some to consider. Be Involved in Events and Find Sponsorships Whatever your business might be, getting involved in an appropriate event is a great way to find new customers and retain the old ones. Of course, this can be an expensive way to advertise. However, it is not so expensive if the business partners up with sponsors who will carry the cost of the events in exchange for advertising rights. Try Cross-Docking Cross-docking can reduce the amount of warehouse space you need to inventory your products, which can save you money. The reason this is so is that cross-docking is the practice of directly transferring goods from inbound vehicles right onto outbound vehicles. Hence, no time spent at all in your warehouse space! Negotiate With Your Vendors If your business vendors are charging you a large amount for their services and it’s hurting your bottom line, it’s probably time for you to try to get a better deal from them. Remember, the negative economy is not just affecting you; it’s affecting them also. They might be willing to give you a better deal simply because they don’t want to lose clients. Just remember, when you are at the negotiating table, you should always keep in mind their own acquisition costs for getting new clients and be willing to leverage that to your benefit. There Is Nothing Wrong With Hiring Smart, Inexperienced People Don’t get it wrong—experience is a good thing. However, it does come with a price. For your next job ad, try replacing the “must have x years of experience” with “recent graduates are welcome to apply.” These newcomers are more likely to think outside the box and have high energy, not to mention the fact they come at a much cheaper cost. If you keep these tips in mind, you are sure to increase the bottom line in your business and be an inspiration to other up-and-coming Black women who also want to start businesses of their own!
