3 Industries Enterprising Black Women Can Kill It In Posted on June 28, 2019May 11, 2024 By Leigh Langston Attention Enterprising Black Women! As a Black female entrepreneur, you are all too aware that you are challenging the “good ol’ boys network.” This will definitely seem evident to you at various points along the way on your journey. One case in point would be the first time that you are at your business, meet someone at the door, and they automatically assume that you aren’t the owner and just another employee. However, hard work has its own reward, and at present, there are three major industries where Black women are taking names. Tech Industry In the last couple of years, Black women have taken the tech industry by storm. One example of this is in Silicon Valley, where Black women have demonstrated the true value of perseverance. If you are a Black female entrepreneur in the tech industry, know that you are not alone. There are role models in the field you can look up to who have been amazingly successful doing things like developing apps. Indeed, there have been many occasions where Black women have noticed they are usually not just the only woman, but also often the only Black person in the room. However, this doesn’t deter them, simply because they have a type of drive that is not present in the majority white male entrepreneur environment. If you’re interested in going into this industry, consider moving to a place where tech startups thrive, like Silicon Valley. This will enable you to make connections with other tech entrepreneurs in the area and will be a good opportunity for your business to thrive. Though technology businesses might have significant startup costs, there are many business grants available to Black women who want to be entrepreneurs that you can take advantage of. Home Improvement Industry A Black female entrepreneur would definitely do well with a home improvement venture. The construction industry has been facing a personnel shortage in the past few years, and this formerly male-dominated business is poised to be hit up by more and more women. Historically stable and consistent, this last year growth in this sector has increased far above projected expectations, according to Screenmobile. If you are skeptical, that is understandable, but Black women are making their mark here in several different sectors. All you have to do is look at the immense amount of organizations devoted to females in construction. These include the Canadian Association of Women in Construction, the National Association of Professional Women in Construction, the National Association of Women in Construction and the Women Construction Owners and Executives USA. Hair and Beauty Care No, this isn’t necessarily opening up a beauty salon (although there is nothing wrong with that). New Black female entrepreneurs are realizing that they can go beyond that basic need to an area where they can mold technology and beauty care together. One example is an app called Swivel Beauty that helps refer women to some of the best hair stylists for their specific hair type. Whether you want to open up a salon, engineer a new hair or beauty product, or create a hair or beauty app, the possibilities in this industry are great. If you have the drive and determination in today’s America, there is no question you can break boundaries no matter what your background might be. Through perseverance and hard work, you can succeed in owning a business and becoming an inspirational role model for other Black businesswomen in the future.
