#ThrowbackThursday: Hurricane Katrina Looting in 2005

I wrote the following in September of 2005 for my Ask Dangerous Lee column.

It is eerily relevant today and sadly it will be 50 years from now.

Hurricane Katrina

I don’t feel like doing the usual Q & A in this issue. I want to talk about the racial drama surrounding Hurricane Katrina relief and some of the stupid ass comments that have spewed from people’s mouths or have ended up on paper.

We’ve all heard of the articles that state Black people are “looting” and that White people are “finding” food. This is so racist and ridiculous that I don’t even need to go into it deeply.

Everyone, Black and White was looting. In order to survive they had to steal food and water. Of course the people looting televisions were taking it a bit too far, but I was not there so I cannot speak on what must have been going through their minds.

Perhaps the easy answer is: They lost everything and they wanted to get it all back.

Enough said!

Victim Blaming

I’m also sick of hearing people say, “Why didn’t they leave when they had a chance?”

Hello! Most of these people are dirt poor. I’m sure the places that they could flee to were also affected by Katrina and many of them didn’t have cars or gas money to flee long distance.

I’m also sure that most of them were not psychic. They didn’t see this coming.

One more thing: Stop calling them refugees. That’s ugly and incorrect. I looked the word up for clarity and it just doesn’t fit. They’re survivors.

One of the stars of my favorite TV shows, Nip Tuck, Kelly Carlson (Kimber) thinks Kanye West was out of line with his “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people.” comment during a Hurricane Katrina telethon.

Kelly states, “I don’t think a lot of people this day and age dislike black people. I mean I think we’ve kind of moved on from that. So, to go on television and say that, I think it’s tacky, I think it’s very low rent.”

It never ceases to amaze me when a White person has an opinion on racism. She probably doesn’t have any close relationships with anyone of color, so how in the hell would she know what Black people or any other ethnic group has had to or is currently dealing with.

She is privileged in every sense of the word. She’s White. She’s blonde. She’s an actress in Hollywood.

Okay, yes she has one “negative” that affirmative action would rescue her from, she’s a woman, but she’s also stupid.

To be more exact she’s ignorant.

Hurricane Katrina

Seriously?

In this day and age people do dislike and in fact hate Black people. For instance, has she not heard of the KKK? It must be nice to be a sheltered princess and oblivious to what other people are going through in the world. I mean what rock are you living under? What community are you living in? When we move on from racism in America or worldwide give me a call.

Note: I won’t be sitting by the phone. I know better. When I’m dead my daughter and her children will be dealing with racism in some form. As long as racist people procreate there will be racism on planet earth!

Speaking of Kanye, who I cannot stand at all. He pissed me off for the last time when I watched him shine his pimp daddy shoes non stop during a post MTV Awards interview.

He sucks!

Anyway, he wasn’t lying about Bush but to say it on a telethon for Katrina relief was in bad taste. That I agree with. Though I’m sure Bush does care about the lost Black people that are Republicans.

Excuse me while I vomit.

Lastly, here are the baffling words of CNN reporter Wolf Blitzer: “You simply get chills every time you see these poor individuals…many of these people, almost all of them that we see are so poor and they are so black, and this is going to raise lots of questions for people who are watching this story unfold.”

So Black? Say What!

What exactly is he saying here? He definitely needs to think before he speaks. Am I too Black to understand? Is he too White to relate? This whole ordeal is just exhausting and the racial overtones take away from the fact that people need help.

Who gives a damn what color they are? Sure race is an issue, unfortunately, in just about everything in life, but it needs to be the back story here but instead it’s the main focus.

Something simple that many of these people can do is watch the movie Crash. It’s out on DVD now and I think it’s the perfect film to watch that deals with present day racism. Then again, ignorance is bliss and some people are happy to stay there.

I’m just a poor Black woman who is also a single mother. So stereotypical. Who am I to change them?

That time I tried to write a script about skin color

skin color

In 2006, I tried writing a script for the first time and the following is what I came up with:

SKIN
An original script
by Dangerous Lee

July 2006 Draft

1. BLACK SCREEN: Sound of baby crying.
2. INT: Hospital Delivery Room
A beautiful black baby is born and crying. The doctor and nurses are all in shock. We then see the mother and father who are white.

MOTHER
“What is it? What’s wrong?”

The child is then turned towards the mother and father. The father looks at his wife accusingly and begins to walk away. The mother looks at child and screams.

3. Int. Hospital Room in same hospital.
Black woman has given birth to a white child and she and her husband are trying to calmly discuss the situation.

MOTHER
“It may be albino!”

FATHER
“Albino babies do not have brown hair.”

MOTHER
“Baby, I did not cheat on you, so there is no need for a DNA test but if that is what you want then go ahead and pull a Maury Povich on me!”

FATHER
(raising voice)
“I am most definitely getting a DNA test! I really don’t need one! Two black people cannot create a white baby!”

The mother starts to cry. At the same time a nurse brings in the baby for a feeding.
4. Int. Zoom to television in room

Special News Report

REPORTER
“All across the country there are reports of families giving birth to children who do not share the same skin color, but after having numerous DNA tests it shows that these children do indeed belong to them…”

I wrote this before I knew anything about Sandra Laing, a woman who comes from at least three generations of White ancestors but appears Black (of African descent). She is an example of atavism. Her family was unaware of their African roots.

I have never seen it, but a movie about her life, also titled Skin, was released in 2008.

Her true life story is freakishly similar to my fictional tale. When I wrote it I had no idea that something like this could really happen.

Nothing ever came of this script but a three-part essay series I wrote and published in 2010 called The Half Series – When Black People Look White tackles colorism and my experience with skin color and race as the mother of a “mixed” child.

I Am The 14% – Black People in America: Why We Will Never Overcome

overcome

Sadly, we won’t.

I Am The 14% – Black People in America: Why We Will Never Overcome

Remember the following fact the next time a Black woman or man is unjustly killed or why it is so hard for us to overcome the effects of racism in this country. Also factor in that many of us only want to assimilate.

We are a minority in more ways than one.

In 2012 US Census Bureau estimated 44,456,009 African Americans in the United States meaning that 14.1% of the total American population of 313.9 Million is Black. This includes those who identify as ‘Black Only’ and as ‘Black in combination with another race’. The ‘Black Only’ category totaled 41.2 million African Americans or 13.1% of the total U.S population.

#IfTheyGunnedMeDown

#IfTheyGunnedMeDown

If they (the police) gunned me down would they use this picture of me on the set of a film to show what type of a person I was?

Would they also mention the fact that I am a single mother on welfare? Also, my name IS Dangerous Lee, would that also be used against me?

Walt Disney Was A Racist, Sexist, Asshole!

walt disney

Walt Disney

So, there’s this corny-looking movie about Walt Disney creating the Mary Poppins film called Saving Mr. Banks starring Tom Hanks as Disney coming out December 20th and I remember that there has been talk that Mr. Disney was racist among other not so nice things. I took to Google and found the video below featuring interviews with people who have worked with and for him sharing their stories, proving that he was a jerk and I also found this article that tries to debunk that he was an ass.

Of course he was a racist, sexist asshole. He was a White man living in a time when many if not most White men were racist, sexist assholes. Color me so not surprised. Disney, as a brand, has promoted many racist, sexist and asshole like themes over the years. We’ve all seen it and bought into it in one way or another. I guess you can say racism, sexism and assholism has brought us all together.

America Not Ready For Interracial Cheerios!

Interracial Cheerios

Some of you have the attitude that racism and its effects are a thing of the past, but the fact that a Cheerios commercial featuring an interracial family has caused what is being called “racist backlash” proves that America has some real and sick issues with race.

However, I also wonder if Cheerios knew exactly what they were doing and this commercial, like all advertising, was created to cause a stir and make a ton of money. I’m already seeing messages online of people saying they are going to buy more Cheerios.

Well played!

I was recently thinking that interracial families should be represented more in major media and then this happens. Be careful what you wish for!

What Cheerios did was groundbreaking and from what I can recall, they are one of the first major companies to use an interracial family to market their product. Although State Farm does have a commercial with an Asian man, a Black woman, and a baby that talks; but it’s not totally clear that the child is his.

The only thing I find remotely offensive about the Cheerios commercial is the fact that this little girl, who looks to be of reading age, seems to not be able to read the huge “Heart Healthy” on the back of the Cheerios box! Not only that, she also didn’t believe her father when he told her that Cheerios is heart healthy. Who did she believe? Her mother!

Is it a feminist Cheerios commercial?

Or…are people upset because the brotha is on the couch having a nap while the White lady is at the table writing checks for a stack of bills? I dunno; I’m reaching for something other than race because in a world where Barack Obama is the President of the United States, this commercial should be considered commonplace.

It’s just as cute and silly as the majority of other commercials on TV and like most commercials, it didn’t make me want to buy the product.

What Do YOU Think?

Poll: Is Racism Worse Post Obama?

We’ve all seen the crazy headlines where some White person has gone bananas on some random Black person and President Obama’s threat rate is up to 400%. Sure, it’s great that we live in a world where a Black man is finally running thangs, but are we better off for it?

Why Was I Called A Nigger Today?

23 - Niggers Are Retarded_jpg

False. Of course…

I was driving in downtown Flint today and there were many streets blocked off because of The Crim race. I could not make a left turn so I proceeded to go straight. A woman in a van behind me was upset, and to be honest that’s fine. I understood the anger and could deal with a car horn blowing at me non-stop for 10 seconds.

I knew they were really pissed as I continued to drive in front of them for a minute more as they rode my ass. When they got a chance to move around me they did so and the heffa in the drivers seat yelled NIGGER as she drove by! Was that necessary?

I mean I could see calling me a BITCH or an ASSHOLE, but a NIGGER? I hadn’t been called a NIGGER out loud in ages.

If I was a hood chick I would have followed her raggedy ass Mystery Machine van and kicked her ass or if I was a thug chick I would of shot her ass.

Actually for all she knows I could have written down her license plate number and maybe me and my girls plan to whoop her ass later. You just never know.

However, my friends, these are the times we live in and Black people are always gonna be considered NIGGERS. I’m sure you’re wondering what my reaction was, right?

Bieber+as+a+nigger+if+you+thought+he+couldn+t+be_c5e02b_4414331

Well, I honked my horn and said “Fuck you, bitch!”. I’m sure she didn’t hear me, and I was hoping to get a good position so that she could hear me call her “Honky Trash”, which I did later, but I’m sure she didn’t hear that either. Yes, I do believe that two wrongs make a right in some cases.

It made me feel better for a moment until I remembered that I will always be a NIGGER to some people. That bothers me. I mean, I already knew that. Most if not all Black people, if they are being honest know what a certain sect of people think of us but when someone calls you a NIGGER, even in a cowardly manner, it stings.

It’s meant to sting but when I hear it I feel like I’m in a time machine.

I mean, how dumb are you to be calling me a NIGGER. You’ve got a lot of nerve. Anyone that consdiers people NIGGERS is a fool and being insulted by a fool sucks!

niggermania nigger jokes

Maybe if she did hear me my ass would be kicked and I’d be in the emergency room. As I said you just never know, but I do know that people are really bold in their cars.

About a month ago as I was waiting at a red light; someone in a car to my left threw an object at me and it hit me in the head. I looked over and it was two young White people laughing their asses off with their window rolled up.

They were making a left turn and I was going forward. If I had something hard and heavy in my car I would of thrown it at them and broke their damn window. I bet that would of taken the smile off their faces.

I really wanna know where people get the balls to do shit like that. I’m sure I’m not their first victim, but as they always say; you will eventually run up on the wrong one and it will be your last rock thrown and the last time you shout NIGGER.

People really are lucky that I don’t fully live up to my name.
