Welfare Wishes and Watermelon Dreams: Being Poor Isn’t A Crime But It Should Be Illegal

poor [poo r]

adjective, poorer, poorest.

1. having little or no money, goods, or other means of support: a poor family living on welfare.

2. Law. dependent upon charity or public support.

As I’m doing some Back to School shopping at the Salvation Army for my daughter, I find myself in a conversation with an older Black man, who after seeing me pull my wallet out to pay for my items says, “I wish I had seen you pull your wallet out before I went to the car to get my money. He’s joking of course, but I tell him, “Nope. You did the right thing by going to get your own money.” We laugh.

A few moments later as I am paying with my debit card in a separate check out lane, he says to me, “I knew I should of had you pay for my stuff!” He’s still joking, but I’m wondering why he’s obsessed with me and this particular joke.

I don’t give a damn if we are at the Salvation Army, you can pay for your own shit. I tell him, “I only spent $14. We’re both shopping here so we must be in the same situation.” “What situation is that?” he asks. I reply, “We’re poor.”

That’s when he got even louder. “Oh no! I’m not claiming that! I’m not poor.” I start to tune him out and by this time I was on my way out the store anyway. He’s still going on and on and  as I am walking out, I say, “I am poor. It’s the truth and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

I understand his attitude, but I think it stinks and it’s stupid. I hear it all the time – “Stop claiming that you’re poor.” Why? I AM poor!

As if saying I’m poor is why I’m poor or as if I start saying I’m rich that my bank account will magically swell up.

I am poor.

I think the real issue is that when people think of poor, they only think of people who look like this:

No, sweetie. Poor people look like me too! Many of us look like we have our shit together. We are the “working poor”.

Besides, why else would I be shopping at places like the Salvation Army, Goodwill or other various consignment stores if I could afford new clothes?

Granted, even if I was living comfortably I would still shop at these places, but not as often as I do now and not because my budget won’t allow me to shop anywhere else.

I’m one of many. Too many. There are millions of poor people in America and all over the world. I don’t know about anyone else, but it was not my dream to grow up and struggle for a living.

However, I will not let the stigma of the word “poor” make me feel ashamed of my current situation.

Happy is Not For Sale

happyThe whole world is on a fake Happy high thanks to the musical talents of Pharrell, but I’m not part of that crowd. It’s been said too many times that money can’t buy happiness, but the truth is happiness is not for sale. If it was for sale  it would still only be attainable by a select few.

A short list of things that money would currently buy for me:

  • A home – I prefer a condo to my small ass income based apartment.
  • A bed – I sleep on a twin daybed. Not cute or comfortable.
  • A new car – My ’97 Escort is a rusty mess that has been parked for months.
  • Student loan and credit debt – :/
  • A medical bill for over $400 – 🙁
  • A new couch – You should see what we currently have to sit on.
  • Car insurance – I’ve been driving without insurance and outdated tags for almost a year!

If I had these things I’m sure I would be on my way to becoming close to happy.

Wasup With Joe the Plumber?

Q: Wasup With Joe the Plumber?

I just watched an interview with Joe the Plumber and he is an idiot! Under Obama’s plan if he makes more than $250,000 a year he would be taxed for 39% of it, which is just 3% more than usual. Joe the Plumber thinks this would be penalization for being successful and working harder to get more in life. Really? Is he serious?

Who the hell should be taxed more is what I wish he would have been asked. Should I who makes well under $30,000 a year be taxed more? I’m broke as hell and please do understand that I am not lazy and my hand is not open begging. I’m Dangerous Lee, so I do what I gotta do just like many other people in my position. I work hard and I have a plan to someday be in the “rich” bracket. You can believe when I get there that I will not have a problem paying a larger percent of taxes. Especially when I know I will get it back.

Until now, though I state it often on my radio show, you probably did not know just how broke I am. Some people don’t see me as poor which boggles my mind. I am what I am. And, I am not financially secure at all. Then again I get the implication because I don’t fit the ignorant stereotype of a poor person. That is another subject and problem all together, but we can get into that another day.

Joe the Plumber if he ever becomes “rich” does not feel that it’s fair to be taxed more than us poor folk who can’t always afford to pay our damn rent or feed ourselves. Taxes are inevitable. We will all pay them or pay dearly for it with jail time. Right or wrong fair or unfair, but if you’re well off it will not hit you hard in the pocket, so what the hell are you whining about?

Joe the Plumber also sees Obama’s plan as socialist. Go to www.dictionary.com and type in ‘Socialism”. More or less socialism is something that benefits the poor and working class. Don’t we need, excuse me deserve some damn breaks to help us survive? Joe the Plumber is currently, I assume, broke as hell too. It’s nice to dream, but he will not be rich anytime soon unless he gets his own reality plumbing show.

That damn “bail out” is bullshit too. Struggling Americans need a bail out and I’m not talking about that check they sent us earlier this year that I had to spend immediately to pay bills. Sure, it helped and I was thankful for it, but it was the biggest tease of my life so far especially because I received it well after the due date I was given based on my SSN.

Back to Joe the Plumber; he continues to be asked who he’s voting for and he refuses to answer. I think it’s quite obvious that he is hanging on the balls of the McCain/Palin ticket based on his made up reality of being well off. Should he not be voting based on his reality today and not his possible reality in lets say five to ten years?

Like I said, he’s an idiot who by the way I hear is unlicensed and owes back taxes! He might wanna look into changing that so he can work on that $250,000. Dumbass! By the way, who gives a shit about Joe when teachers get a janky ass paycheck on a weekly basis???

When you’re done looking up “Socialism” please look up “Maverick” and have a nice chuckle on moi.
