4 of the Best Celebrity Spats

It there’s one thing we love more than a pair of celebrity friends, it’s a pair of celebrity enemies. Here are four of the best celebrity bust ups from recent years.

Mariah Carey vs. Eminem

There’s certainly no love lost between Eminem and Mariah Carey. It all stems from the rappers claims that he slept with the pop star.

Carey categorically denies that this ever happened, and the pair have been feuding ever since. She has claimed that Eminem must be a little bit mental and has accused him of being obsessed with her. She even included a spoof of his character in her video for the song “Obsessed” in 2009.

Not being funny but if anyone is obsessed and needs to let go it sounds like it is Mariah!

Paris Hilton vs Nicole Richie

The two Stars of The Simple Life are friends, then enemies, then friends. It’s impossible to keep up! Their biggest bust up came in April 2005 with the pair refusing to even speak to each other for over a year.

Neither Paris nor Nicole have spoken publicly about the cause, but it’s thought to have something to do with Nicole’s decision to show a homemade sex tape featuring Paris to a group of mutual friends. It’s a rumour that’s supported by Paris stating “Nicole knows exactly what she did wrong, and that’s all I’m going to say about it.”

It’s kind of a shame that they’ve made up again as we might be subjected to more of their awful, awful shows!

Wyclef Jean vs. Sean Penn

Wyclef Jean and Sean Penn fell out in 2010 over their mutual love of Haiti. When Jean announced that he was planning to run in the countries presidential elections Penn was highly critical of the musician, accusing him of being absent from his country when they needed help most in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake.

But Jean hit back saying that the only reason Penn hadn’t seen him in Haiti was that he was “too busy sniffing cocaine!”

Rihanna vs. Ciara

As it’s the 21st century we’ve got to include a twitter spat. Last February Ciara criticised Rihanna on television when talking to Joan Rivers, claiming that the last time they saw each other the megastar was rude to her.

And so the war of tweets began. Rihanna apologised…saying she must have forgotten to tip her, which is a little harsh. Ciara then threatened Rihanna, saying that she should be careful next time she saw her on or off the stage. Rihanna then jokingly called her a gangster before finally tweeting good luck booking that stage you speak of. It all seems a bit silly really.

A Quick Style Guide For Wearing Wedges

Wedge shoes – a quick style guide for wearing wedges.

Wedge shoes are notoriously comfortable to wear and a lot easier to walk in than high heels or stilettoes will ever be, which should make them the perfect choice of shoes if you are like me and still feel just a little bit uneasy and precariously balanced wearing sky-high heels.

Apart from the fact that they are easy to walk in, I still struggle occasionally with the logic of wearing shoes that make it difficult to perform a simple body motion like walking, wedges do an absolutely fantastic job of making your legs appear longer and more lithe.

What more reason do you need to show off some leg than footwear that can make your legs as sexy as high heels do without the discomfort?

Wedges are the perfect excuse to flash those legs in a dress or short skirt. In the Summer you can wear wedge sandals for a casual but sexy look accentuating those calves. Wedge boots and sandals are great for the Summer. I personally like the cut out style wedge boots, all the benefits of a sandal minimising sweaty feet in the Summer but with no compromise on style or looks. For a really sexy look try wearing them in combination with a cute pair of shorts, if you have the figure go for a pair of cut off denim Daisy Dukes. Think Jessica Simpson but without the cowboy boots . Anyone old enough to remember the original Dukes of Hazard

Going Retro

Wedges are pretty versatile and can be mixed and matched a lot more than say a pair ogf high heels ever should be. The Retro look is a true fashion statement that never seems to go out of fashion so try combining wedge heeled shoes, boots or sandals with some flared retro style jeans for a cool and casual look. If you get it just right the jeans will be just long enough to cover up most of your gorgeous shoes( I know !) but will create a really good illusion that you are actually taller than you really are and that is combined with the small lift from the wedge heel too. Try not to cover the whole of the shoe though, ideally you want some or all of the heel showing to really create that visual trickery of increased height. If you are already tall would you like to be even taller?

Staying on the subject of denim and wedge shoes, if you wear a pair of wedges with skinny jeans they can really create that sculpted look for your legs I mentioned earlier. Important to get a pair of skinny jeans that fit well not just because if they are too tight you may lose all movement in your legs but because if they bunch at the bottom of your leg it does not look as clean as when they fall perfectly at your ankle. If you wear wedge boots with skinny jeans this bunching will be hard to prevent and can look a bit messy as they have a habit of not staying in your boots.

Wedge shoes can help give you height and help make your legs look longer so next time you are shoe shopping consider living on the wedge or getting a wedgucation.

Spring Cleaning Shortcuts To Make Your Life Better

It’s almost summer which means spring-cleaning is on our minds. If you have already performed the traditional overhaul of your home it is time to do a mental check. How do you feel now? Usually when we do a deep clean of our home we feel rejuvenated, refreshed and calm. Imagine taking those same feelings and feeling them all year long. What if we told you there are simply tips you can do to improve every area of your life. By using the spring cleaning approach we’ve got a plan for you, that will help you feel more alive, relaxed and rejuvenated in every area of your life. Here are tips to help you clean up your outside world so you can feel good on the inside.

Your Home

There’s no place like home, and having a clean sanctuary will help you be more productive. This season get organized and feel your mood switch from stress to no more mess. Sometimes clutter can overwhelm us and make it hard for us to see the big picture. Start small and wrok your way to the bigger areas. By breaking up the tasks you will feel more accomplished after each one is done and clean.

Your Work

We spend the majority of our life working. It is just as important to enjoy what you do for a living, as it is to enjoy where you work. If your work environment is cluttered or filled with things that don’t ultimately help you do your job better then it is time to do a deep cleaning. Focus on your desk area first and make sure to cleanse the entire area with cleanser.

Your Body

Recognize that your body is your temple and what you put into it will effect your overall mood and ability to cope with stress. If you are feeling overwhelmed and frustrated ask yourself what have you been eating lately? Choose healthy unprocessed foods for a more balanced energy level. Make sure you are taking care of your entire body. Many people eat healthy but don’t keep up with regular physicals or dentist office cleanings. Keep your teeth healthy by brushing at least twice a day and flossing everyday. The daily maintenance will help you feel clean and balanced and keep you smiling all year long.

By cleaning up the cluttered or messy areas in your life you will feel better and be able to enjoy life more with less stress and less mess.

Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month Spotlight: Lily Mariye

Name and occupation:

Lily Mariye – Writer/Director/Actor

What do you love most about being of Asian Heritage?

I like the knowledge of knowing exactly where I’m from. I like the sense of community, the pride of watching other Asian Americans break through the glass ceilings of their professions, whether they be basketball or television directing.

Tell us an interesting Asian History Fact:

Did you know that one of the original members of the Black Panthers  was Japanese American? Richard Aoki was the only Asian American officer, holding the title of Field Marshall. Did you know that Eddie Van Halen is half Chinese/Malaysian?

Who or what inspires you most?

Great films. Great Books. Great Television Shows. And the people in my life who’ve been through hell and high water, but manage to land on their feet.

Something you often think to yourself that you’d like to say publicly:

As grateful as I am for the wonderful things that have happened to me, I’m even more grateful for the obstacles that have been in my path. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without them.

And I’m secretly addicted to the TV show, “Las Vegas Jailhouse.”  “Bring out the chair!”

5 Ways to Reuse Vinyl Records

Record Bowl

The most popular way to re-use old records. It’s pretty easy too; just ventilate your kitchen, and pre-heat your oven. Place the record over an oven proof dish, then put a bag of dried beans (in cloth not plastic) on the record. Remove from the oven (using mitts) then quickly shape it (wearing heat proof gloves). Leave to cool. Remember you aren’t limited to the typical black vinyl record; many artists out there released printed albums.

Cupcake Stand

An inventive way to re-use records and put a twist on the traditional display for cupcakes – has a neat 50s theme too, if you are doing a Diner themed party. Simply use superglue, a kitchen towel holder, 4 lightweight brackets, a 12 inch record and a 9 inch record. Affix the two brackets where you want the first ‘shelf’. Top the bracket with superglue and gently press the 12 inch record onto them. Repeat for the smaller record, then leave to dry. Display with cupcakes in colourful cases.

Vinyl Jewelry

You can make some really beautiful jewelry from old vinyl records, but it does require good tools. There are two main methods; cutting shapes such as birds or lightning bolts, then drilling a small hole for a chain; or cutting into lengths and using a heat gun to transform it into chokers, cuffs etc. Music themed shapes are especially striking, for example a guitar or laser cut musical notes.

Record Bag

A very simple DIY. Simply cut the record in half, then drill four holes, two on each side. Cut a 2 inch wide length of PVC in a matching colour, which measures the length of the curved outside of half a record. Using some extremely strong adhesive, glue the curved side of the record to the PVC. Repeat with the other side. Thread either some colourful ribbon or braided speaker wire (not live).

Upcycled Vinyl Art

There is some beautiful art created from vinyl records. My favourite piece is a tsunami created from records, called Soundwave by artist Jean Shin. Records also lend themselves very well to Dali style installations, industrial pieces (which often incorporate shattered or melted plastic) and in the portrayal of creatures, for example a giant fish, with records overlapping to represent the interlocking scales. This looks particularly beautiful with gold or copper coloured records, especially in alternating rows – remember vinyl can be spray painted using plasti-kote.

Solo Parenting: Tell Me A “Me-Story”

If your kids are all teens or tweens, you may choose to skip this week’s column; this week I’m talking to parents of kids still young enough for bedtime stories.

What I’m about to suggest is really applicable to all little kids and their parents, but it’s particularly important to those from single-parent families. Why? Because it  reinforces the child’s sense of self, which can be particularly fragile in a single-parent household, if the child remembers the way things were “before”…that is, before Dad (or Mom) moved out, or before Dad (or Mom) died. The child may be afraid of the remaining parent leaving or dying…and then what will become of the child? This worry can have many repercussions, including a fragile sense of self.

“Me-stories” can help bolster that sense of self.

What are “me-stories”? “Me-stories” come in two formats: Fiction and non-fiction.

Nonfiction “me-stories”

Nonfiction “me-stories” require no imagination, only memory. They are stories about the child when she or he was younger, stories he may or may not remember, or may simply remember having heard you retell before. They include everything from the story of the day or night she was born to the story of his first step, her first  trip to see Santa, the time he hid a large box and you couldn’t find him, the time she ran away from home…as far as the next-door neighbor’s, the first time he played hide-and-seek and hid in plain sight with his eyes closed, the story of how she acquired her favorite doll….

Kids love hearing about themselves and being the “star” of the story. Face it—most of us, even at our age, enjoy being the center of attention. The only way kids differ in that is that it is even truer of kids than of adults.

Fiction “me-stories”

Fiction “me-stories” require some imagination on the part of the storyteller. You need  to “write” (aloud, in the venerable oral storytelling tradition) a story in which your son or daughter is the protagonist—the hero or heroine of the story. The story doesn’t require an elaborate plot, a villain or other antagonist, high drama, a chase, or a slam-bang conclusion. It needs to be more exciting (not to mention longer) than, “One day Brian went to pre-school. He had a good day. The snack was applesauce—his favorite—and he learned to count up to 15. A new kid came to the school, and he and Brian made friends. When he came home, his puppy wanted to play, so Brian and Ruff chased each other around the house.” It does not, however, need to be high drama. It can deal with the day-to-day events he or she is familiar with—just in more detail, and more exciting detail, than the intentionally weak example above.

You can elaborate on the theme of “new kid in school” and make up a story about that. You can make up an adventure story in which she gets lost and finds her way home, or is rescued. You can let your imagination really soar and describe an encounter with a visitor from another planet, or tell how he was drafted to be the only child in a super-secret protective agency whose members go around righting wrongs and fighting for justice. The point is that the child is the hero (or heroine) of the story.

Reassurance in a story

“Me-stories,” whether fiction or non-fiction, are comforting to a child as well as boosting his or her ego…and of course, besides all that, they’re just plain fun. A child whose parent is no longer present in the home needs extra reassurance…and what an easy way this is to offer it to him or her.

Tell your child a “me-story.”

Sex and Relationships with Mikaya Heart

When a powerful orgasm surges through our bodies, it reaches into all those dark corners where we may be hiding difficult emotions. As we grow up we are taught that part of being adult is controlling our show of feelings, and we learn to suppress any that are considered inappropriate. But feelngs always want to flow, and although we may manage to hide them, even from ourselves, for many years, we will always be using some energy to prevent them from emerging into the light of day. In order to have an orgasm, we have to allow the body to take charge, and the body isn’t interested in keeping those emotions hidden. When the energy of orgasm releases, it floods through us and can easily carry those old stored emotions out into the open, and then we may find ourselves feeling things that seem quite irrelevant to the moment. For instance, women who have in the past been molested or forced to have sex against their will may experience intense anger at the moment of orgasm even when they are having a very loving exchange. (This can happen even to women who don’t remember any sexual abuse, since we inherit memories and fears from our culture and our families.) It is very likely that those feelings will arise when we are with a partner whom we really love and trust, because it may well be that we originally suppressed them at a time when expressing them would have been dangerous. The subconscious self is very smart–it won’t be prepared to let go of them until it’s safe to do so: when we are with someone who really loves us.

Recognizing and giving voice to those old feelings is a necessary process of healing. First of all, it frees up the energy that we have been using to hold them down. Secondly, those kinds of feelings are literally toxic, and can cause all kinds of deepseated dis-ease which may manifest physically, mentally, or emotionally. We are much more likely to be healthy individuals when we get rid of them. Thirdly, when we are freed from any residue of old feelings, the feelings that do come up for us are always related to the present moment and, since they never lie, they can give us a great deal of useful information which the rational brain might not be able to access.

Loss of sexual desire in longtern relationships is often due to the need to keep hidden feelings under control. Sometimes this is resentment that has arisen within the relationship, and sometimes it is older than that. Once we become comfortable and at ease with our partner, the part of our psyche that wants to release the hidden stuff starts rearing its ugly head; and since sexual desire brings it up, we cannot afford to continue being sexual with that person unless we address the feelings. Of course, this occurs on a level that isn’t accessed by the normal rational thought process, and it can be made much more difficult when we try to use the rational brain to justify what we are feeling. I wrote a blog on feelings about a month ago, which will be very useful to anyone going through this kind of thing.

Sometimes the feelings that come up apparently have nothing to do with sex. It may be very difficult to talk to your partner about them, especially when they are very intense. But if you want to maintain intimacy with your partner, you must be able to talk about what is going on for you. Know that you are not alone. This is a fairly common phenomenon amongst women, and although it can be a difficult process to go through, being on the other side of it is very empowering. If you suspect your partner may be having feelings that she isn’t talking about, encourage her to do so by letting her know that you are sympathetic. And in spite of the fact that I have used the female pronoun here, it is certainly possible for men to have the same problem.

The Top Trends for Teeth in 2012

Cosmetic surgery is becoming more affordable and accessible throughout the world, and is certainly in demand. With shows like Extreme Makeover showing us miracle results and transformations, it’s not surprising that so many of us now feel ok with the idea of going under the knife to improve our appearance.

Amongst the facelifts and rhinoplasty is a huge choice of cosmetic dentistry and procedures, from a few implants, to a total reconstruction of the teeth and gums. Television advertisements for lip gloss and beauty products draw attention to the perfect teeth of the celebrities that some many of us long to look like. Looking good has now become more than just being well groomed – it’s about perfection on every part of our bodies including our teeth.

Recent fashions to hit the States include diamond encrusted precious metal “grills” that are worn in front of the top teeth to dazzle passers-by with a cheeky grin. The craze for grills is borne from the rap stars but is now a mainstream trend. Squeaky clean Land Del Ray was recently spotted sporting a glittered gold tooth embellishment, one that apparently isn’t permanent. More dramatically, Kanye West has replaced the entire bottom row of his teeth permanently with a diamond and gold grill because he thought it was much cooler than plain old natural teeth. The grill trend has really taken off, and it’s now easy for anyone to purchase the tooth jewellery online and in specialist jewellers, and once obtained they can show it off on the narcissistic website “Rate my grill”.

A set of upper and lower grills with diamante embellishments.  Some youths spend around $36000 on sapphire, ruby and diamond encrusted grills.

Lil Wayne

Some subtler tooth embellishments on offer are the placement of small gemstones in a hole drilled in the front of the tooth enamel. Less dramatically, gems and jewels can be glued to the tooth with a permanent dental adhesive. Worryingly, teenagers have access to online suppliers of “tooth adhesive” and tooth gems for do-it-yourself dentistry that can be harmful – not least due to ingestion of glue and gems becoming loose when eating.

More sensible celebrities are still opting for the standard treatments such as tooth whitening and orthodontics. Invisible braces have made it much cooler and subtler to undergo orthodontic straightening treatments because more natural smiles are coming back in to fashion over the use of perfectly square implants and veneers. The invisible braces can hardly be seen and are a huge improvement on previous metal braces that some affectionately call “train tracks”!
