Chris Tucker Live: A Review

I had the pleasure of seeing Chris Tucker live at the beautiful FOX Theatre in Detroit last night. He was hilarious! Had tons of material and was entertaining as hell. The show, surprisingly, was not a sell out but if you weren’t in attendance you really missed out.

His was the second live stand up that I’ve seen at the FOX Theatre. The first was Martin Lawrence and he didn’t put on a good show at all. He even threw in some old ass jokes for the road. Just lazy.

This was not my first time seeing Chris Tucker live. When I was a youngster (and so was Chris) I saw him perform at a local club in Flint.

The show was cancelled during his performance because he got into a fight with a girl who was heckling him in the audience. I remember that leaving a bad taste in my mouth for him and his comedy over the years but somehow by the time the first Rush Hour came out he was back in my good graces.

I still can’t believe he fought a woman, tho. To be young, crazy, high and dumb…

Chris Tucker Re-tweeted Me! “Christmas Tucker” is in reference to a joke he tells about Michael Jackson giving him a new name. Too funny!!!

5 Reasons You Didn’t See Spike Lee’s Film – Oldboy

  1. You’ve never heard of it. When I saw it there were only three other people in the theater!
  2. You didn’t know Spike Lee was the director or you did know and didn’t give a shit.
  3. You didn’t see Spike Lee’s interview with Oprah. Had you seen it there’s a possibility that you would of been interested. It’s what got me to the theater.
  4. You’re not a fan of Josh Brolin. I admit he was not the best choice for the lead, but he did well enough.
  5. You hate violence on the big screen. (sissy)

Oldboy is described as a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement, but that description leaves out so many details. This movie has tons of twists and sick turns that will leave you mentally disturbed after watching. I describe it as a mindfuck!

Oldboy is also a remake of the 2003 South Korean film, Oldeuboi. I have not seen Oldeuboi, but since seeing Spike Lee’s version my interest in piqued. Spike’s version is catching hell from both critics and casual movie goers, but I loved it and I need to see it again to make sense of all the madness.

The Jacksons Unity Tour 2012: A Review

Tito, Jackie, Marlon, and Jermaine at The FOX Theatre in Detroit. The only image I was able to take from my seat. Does the iPod have a focus feature I don’t know about?

I have loved Michael Jackson all my life, minus a couple of years after birth, so by default I love the rest of The Jacksons. There was no way I was missing this concert and I’m glad I didn’t because I had a ball! The anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death is today and attending this concert so close to the anniversary of his death felt good.

Tito, Jackie, Jermaine, and Marlon performed many Jackson 5 and Jacksons songs, but they also performed some of Michael’s jams like, “Wanna Be Startin’ Something“, Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough“, “Rock With You”, “I Can’t Let Her Get Away”, and Jermaine sang “Gone Too Soon” as a montage of Michael images appeared on screen.

Jermaine also performed a medley of solo hits that included, “Dynamite” and “Do What You Do”. The brothers performed songs I love like, “Heartbreak Hotel”, “Show You The Way To Go“, “Lovely One” and opened the show with “Can You Feel It”.

I wish they would have performed “Body”, “Torture” and “Nothing That Compares To You”, but I know they sacrificed performing their own music to celebrate Michael.

One downside was the sound. The brothers could not be heard clearly or at all during most of the songs. At one point Jermaine asked if his mic could be turned up. There were also some other sound issues, but it didn’t affect the show overall.

I was also sitting near a situation that almost turned into a fight because a man and his date would not sit down during a moment in the show when everyone else on the main floor had sat down. How ridiculous would a fight at a Jacksons concert have been?

Family Tradition: Me and my daughter attended The Jacksons concert.

As usual, I had a good time with a few other concert goers and The Jacksons ’84 Victory Tour concert t-shirt that I wore once belonged to my mother and it was a huge conversation piece.

I always love the atmosphere when I am around other people that love Michael and the rest of The Jacksons. I don’t know what it is, but it makes me feel good and reminds me why I have remained a fan throughout my life.

I do have one complaint; where’s RANDY??? One concert goer said Randy was working at Little Ceasars and another said he was in jail. I know damn well that neither of those goofy ass statements are true, but why is he not on this tour?

Oh well, this video is for you Randy. Marlon, where the hell were YOU?

Movie Review: Melancholia

Melancholia first came across my radar because of the hoopla surrounding Kirsten Dunst appearing nude in the film. I believe that was a ploy to get people interested in this under the radar film, but the plot is what interested me most. The first time I watched Melancholia the beginning slow motion sequence bored me to death, but as the movie went on I was in a trance as parts of the sequence began to make sense. I love this movie. I love the soundtrack. It’s a beautiful work of art. It’s a movie that will make you think and feel. Having said all that not everyone that sees this film will see it that way. Not just because we’re all different, but because this film is not typical or ordinary by Hollywood standards. The second time I watched it I was fully able to appreciate it without prejudice.

Melancholia is the name of a planet that has been hiding behind the sun and is now on a collision course to end life on earth. Melancholia plays a small yet volatile role in this film. Usually in films that deal with the end of the world the focus is on how everyone in the world is panacking or a plan to save the world. In this film the focus is on this family and their literal view of Melancholia as it heads towards earth.

I didn’t like Kirsten Dunst and Alexander Skarsgård as a couple in this film, but their relationship is only valid during the first half of the movie, so I was thankful when they parted. I was also thankful because their relationship seemed to be forced upon them in the first place.  I also didn’t totally understand why Kirsten Dunst’s character has an American accent and her mother, father, and sister have English accents. But, I know that these things I’ve mentioned are part of the soul of the film and not having everything spelled out is part of what makes you think when watching this film. It’s also irrevelant when you consider the fact that the end of the world is near.

I love a movie with an unhappy ending. I’m definitely gonna buy this one!

Movie Review: Tower Heist

It wasn’t funny at all. Hated how the all star cast played off of one another. Hated the plot. Hated that Eddie Murphy sounds like The Donkey from Shrek throughout the entire film. Please do not say, “Of course he sounds like The Donkey. The Donkey is Eddie Murphy.” Watch an Eddie Murphy film prior to Shrek and listen to his voice. He didn’t always sound like the damn donkey. In his upcoming film, 1000 Words (ironically he is being asked to speak less in this film), he doesn’t sound like The Donkey either. Needless to say, I was not impressed. My mom and daughter loved. Go figure!

Movie Review: Paranormal Activity 3

I give Paranormal Activity 3 two stars for the cool special effects and the creepy things that happened to the little girls. That’s it!

This needs to be the last installment of this film because it has worn out its welcome.

If they make a fourth, I am avoiding it like the plague.

Also, there are scenes that we are shown in the trailer to this film that go down in a totally different way when you see the film.

This is false advertising and I don’t like it.

Movie Review: Contagion

I enjoyed this film because I was also creeped out by it. If you’ve managed to avoid getting sick with the stomach flu this winter cold season, consider yourself lucky. I am among the thousands if not millions of people who have survived the stomach flu virus in the past few months. Try to imagine that the stomach flu is what is killing people in this film as you watch it; we’d all be dead!

That’s a sobering reality when you consider that viruses are getting stronger and we get weaker. Contagion could very well be a prediction as to what is supposed to destroy humankind this year. Oh yea, did you forget that December 21, 2012 is the end of the world according to those that believe the theory and they have forced many of us to believe it as well…but not me, I’m too Dangerous and too damn smart to believe that the end of the world can be predicted.

Anyway, this film gives you the cause and effect of a super virus that kills an asinine amount of people . Wash your hands before watching!

Movie Review: Red Tails

Red Tails is a very important film, one that almost never saw the light of day because Hollywood did not know how to market a film with an all Black cast. You market a film with all brown people the same way you would market any other action film. Hollywood is certainly not having a problem shoving a War Horse down our throats.

It still baffles me that Hollywood didn’t know what to do with Red Tails, but since Hollywood is enamered with remakes and bringing everything to the big screen in 3D, I am really not surprised. Hollywood, for the lack of a better word, sucks! To be honest, Red Tails is a film that I would not have much interest in if there was no connection to the African-American experience. I am not a fan of war films, but because the success of this film opening weekend will send a very strong message to Hollywood in terms of the power of Black films I was more than happy to see it.

It’s a very good film. I am always happy to see Black faces on the big screen because it means Black folks are working and are being represented! I’ve heard that some Black women are upset that one of the characters (Lightning) is in love with an Spanish speaking Italian woman. Well, guess what ladies, they are based in Italy. Is this really such a big deal or a big surprise??? Don’t get me wrong, I get where the frustrartion is coming from, but it is misplaced, and by holding that type of anger you miss the whole point of the film.

I appreciate that George Lucas made sure this film was made and that he took millions of dollars out of his own pocket to make it happen. Quite frankly, that is the least he could have done and I am sure that he will make it all back and then some. The only complaint I have is that there seemed to be something lacking in the sound of the film. I feel like the war scenes wern’t loud enough and the cinematography was a bit off, but it takes more than $58 million to produce a film with all the necessary bells and whistles.

George Lucas has said that if this film does well that there is a prequel and a sequel that will be much better, so please support this film so that we can see more sexy chocolate on the big screen. Eat your heart out, Hollywood!

Movie Review: Alvin and The Chipmunks – Chipwrecked

It was a helluva lot better than the last Chipmunk movie. The storyline was plausable because that pain-in-the-ass, Alvin, would of course cause trouble on a family vacation. I didn’t really dig Ian’s (David Cross) character in this film because I felt he was out of place and the rip offs from Cast Away made it a lil’ corny to me, but the music and cutness factor make it very likable. Songs by Lady GaGa, Willow Smith, and Destiny’s Child were sung as well as a few oldies. It’s definitely one for the whole family because everyone will get something out of it.

Movie Review: 30 Minutes or Less

It’s silly, it’s funny, it’s stupid! It’s exactly what you would expect from all the men featured in the movie poster, though the one with his thumb on the detonator kinda gets on my damn nerves. I literally LOL a few times and SMH as well. There’s really not much more to say other than you will enjoy going along for the  ride. Oh, and the soundtrack isn’t bad either…
