Jeans are an ever-popular item of clothing and they go well with a lot of different clothes. Although jeans are timeless they can surely show signs of fading and tearing if you don’t take care of them properly. Here are some of the top tips to help you keep your jeans looking like new and in good condition.
Reduce The Times You Wash Your Jeans
Jeans start to fade quickly if you wash them a lot and especially at higher degrees of temperature. Don’t wash your jeans unless you really need to. Jeans don’t get dirty from normal use that quickly and you can easily use them at least five times before you need to wash them.
The GQ guide to denim suggests that you should avoid washing your jeans for the first six to eight months after purchase.
Wash Your Jeans With Cold Water
As already mentioned high temperature washing water fades your jeans a lot quicker than cold washing water. Therefore you should wash them on a cold washing program unless they are very dirty.
There are some great cold-water detergents out there these days that will provide you with adequate washing results.
Wash Your Jeans Inside Out
Before you wash your jeans you also need to turn them inside out to ensure they don’t fade as quickly. Jeans will generally lose colour when they are washed but when you turn them inside out this fading is more evened out and won’t appear in patches.
Hand Wash Whenever Possible
If at all possible try to hand wash your jeans instead of washing them in a washing machine. This will prevent them from fading, as the interaction with the water isn’t as long as in the machine. Fill your bathtub with cold water and add some cold-water detergent. Add your jeans and let them soak for an hour, occasionally stirring the water.
Allow Your Jeans To Dry Naturally
Don’t dry your jeans in a dryer whether you wash them in a washing machine or by hands. If you opt for hand washing your jeans then carefully squeeze any excess water out and hang your jeans to dry.
Soak Your Jeans With Vinegar
If you have very dark coloured jeans you should soak them in vinegar. Add regular vinegar to a bath filled with water and let them soak for a while. Rinse them with cold water and leave out to dry.
If you only want to wash your new jeans in the washing machine you can also add vinegar to your washer. Don’t add any detergent but just run the washing program as normal.
Invest In Quality
The best way to ensure your jeans don’t lose their shape and start fading is to invest in good quality. So instead of opting for low quality jeans that are cheap in price, buy quality jeans. These will keep you happy for a longer period of time and thus will prove to be better for your wallet in the long run.
A great brand is G Star jeans and you can get them from J-Bees International.
