During the autumn and winter seasons, it seemed as if jumpsuits and playsuits – an absolutely huge trend over the last couple of years – had started to fade in popularity. However, the same way as it happens every year, the look came back in a really big way the moment the sun peeped out from behind the clouds.
A perfect look for summer, playsuits and jumpsuits are at once playful, comfy and cool, and they can also be a chic, elegant alternative to a dress for formal occasions and nights out. Absolutely loads of celebs are loving jumpsuits right now, from Elizabeth Banks and Brooklyn Decker to Zoe Saldana and Jennifer Morrison. We even spotted an uber-chic Carey Mulligan in a seriously sexy black jumpsuit at Cannes 2013, along with Solange Knowles in a gleaming white number with flirty ruffled shoulders.
If you need some ideas and inspiration for your summer wardrobe, look no further. Let’s take a peek at some of our favorite celebrity jumpsuit looks of the moment:
At Cannes 2013, Brit actress Carey Mulligan surprised fashion fans by showing up to the premiere of her latest flick, The Great Gatsby, not in an extravagant gown but in a jumpsuit. But what a jumpsuit! Carey has minimalist chic down to a fine art, choosing a simple black jumpsuit with a beaded and bowed inverted neckline, gathering at the waist and a pair of T-bar heels, likely inspired by the 1920s style seen in the film. She wore her hair up and make-up simple, with the finished look being delicate, chic, sharp and ethereally beautiful. Full marks Carey!
The star of Only God Forgives, which was also screened at Cannes, also managed to rock the chic minimalist look in her jumpsuit. Ratha chose a strapless beige and white number with a beautiful origami-inspired neckline, a look that was crisp and sophisticated but that also flattered her small frame.
When it comes to perfect design and beautiful detailing, the white jumpsuit worn by Solange Knowles to Cannes 2013 has to be declared the jumpsuit to end all jumpsuits. The piece had long sleeves, long trousers cuffed at the ankle and most notably, a ruffled design around the neckline. The gleaming white went perfectly with Solange’s glowing complexion, and her characteristic Afro hairstyle teamed with the slight flare on the trousers gave her look a bit of slamming 1970s disco cool.
The last of the Cannes crew to show off her fashion credentials in a jumpsuit was actress Rooney Mara, who chose an edgier look for a film festival party. The jumpsuit was a monochrome affair in a draped cut and short sleeves. No one but Rooney, with her flawless complexion, scraped-back hair and impeccable sense for picking out edgy but brilliant women’s clothes could have pulled off such a bold look quite so well.
At a recent red carpet event, the actress and model Brooklyn Decker showed off her playful side in a black and white floral jumpsuit. On its own, the jumpsuit may not have worked, but teamed with ankle-cuff heels and an adorable pinned-up plaited hairstyle, Brooklyn looked fresh, bright and also very chic.
