Having remained the most popular clothing fabric for decades now, we can confidently say that denim is not going anywhere any time soon. Jeans and denim trends continue to come and go, so to keep up, you’ll need our insider guide to the hottest denim trends of spring/summer 2013.

Pastel skinny jeans

Pastel jeans are absolutely huge right now, embraced by everyone from Jessica Alba (who loves the trend, owning pairs in every shade under the sun) and Cameron Diaz to Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry. Pastel itself is a big trend for the spring/summer season, and the perfect way to wear it is in a pair of pretty-colored skinnies. Coral is one of the most flattering shades, but you can also go for lilac, duck egg blue, pale and pretty lemon yellow or sugar pink. Pastels, and indeed light colors in general, aren’t always the most flattering to wear on the bottom half, but you can pull off the look by remembering a few tips. Choose jeans styles which give you adequate support in the tummy and lift in the bum, ensuring they fit well and there is no bagging of denim around the knees. You should also aim for jeans styles with a little stretch in them, remembering always to wear a light colour on top.

Teensy denim cut-off shorts

At this year’s sun-soaked Coachella Valley music festival, by far the most spotted item was denim cut-off shorts. However, the new trend is not for any old fringed or frayed blue denim shorts, but teeny tiny cut-offs worn as high as you dare. At Coachella, everyone from Alexa Chung and Alessandra Ambrosia to Pixie Geldof and Rumer Willis were spotted in tiny denim cut-offs. If you’re looking for something to wear on a summer holiday or for an upcoming festival, look no further than a pair of cut-off denim hot pants and a classic white tee.

Sleeveless denim jackets

The sleeveless denim jacket, or denim vest, has been a favorite of stars like Jessica Alba for a while now, but the look really started to take off this spring/summer. Creating an instant silhouette whilst also giving you an extra layer to snuggle up in, the sleeveless denim vest is the perfect thing to throw on when night starts to fall after a hit summer’s day. Wear with everything from floral maxis to pretty white summer dresses, or pair with bright colored skinny jeans for a double-denim look (yes, it is OK to wear double denim now!).

Cropped boyfriend jeans

Everywhere you look at the moment, you’ll see baggy boyfriend jeans. These are not a new trend, but the style has evolved recently. Boyfriend jeans are not being worn cropped, usually just above the ankle, with a turn-up at the ends. Stars such as Megan Fox, Heidi Klum, Eva Longoria and Katie Holmes are all big fans of this look, but it can be tricky to pull off. You need to choose slouchy, oversized jeans, but make sure that they don’t ride too low or fall down altogether – this is not a good look. The idea is for the jeans to hang straight from your frame until they turn up neatly at the bottom, showing off a flash of ankle and a cute pair of sandals or wedges.
