It seems life in general tends to be more casual these days. Often times, employees blur the lines between business and casual attire. It is no wonder women have a difficult time choosing an outfit in the morning!
While the line might be blurred in some work places, there is still a distinction between what is considered business attire and casual attire. Overly casual clothes should never be worn to work – no matter how laid back the environment has gotten.
Every workplace is different and every profession has a different dress code. However, it is better to be safe than sorry. In most cases, it is best to avoid these seven things when choosing your work outfit.
1. Cleavage-Baring Tops
Save these revealing shirts for non-work occasions. They are just too sexy for on-the-job – no matter where you work. Keep yourself covered in a flattering, professional way.
2. Short Skirts
Again, remember you are going to work, not a night club. No matter how amazing your legs might look in a mini, opt for something longer. This is especially important for petite women. Wear a skirt or dress that is too short and you’ll look like a little girl – not a sexy business woman. And girlish is the last thing you want to look! No matter what the profession, you want to be taken seriously!
Some work places are more casual than business. Others offer casual Friday. For the most part, it is safe to assume you should save your t-shirt and your jeans for the weekend. If you absolutely must wear jeans to work, opt for a darker wash; you’ll look more put together. And under no circumstances should you wear distressed jeans.
Wearing high heels to work is a fine idea. In fact, often times a pair of heels makes you look even more professional. However, heels that are too high are too sexy for the workplace. Plus, they tend to be darn uncomfortable to wear all day long!
Unless your work dress code is casual 24/7 and no customers will ever see you, you really shouldn’t wear a t-shirt. It doesn’t matter if you don a plain or graphic t-shirt; your appearance will come across as sloppy.
6. Flip Flops
While we are talking about shoes, we should mention flip flops are a workplace no-no too. Unless you are a lifeguard or serve in some other capacity on the beach, flip flops are a fashion fatality in the workplace. If you tend to be a more casual person and heels aren’t your thing, opt for a nice pair of flats. There are plenty of comfortable shoes that look professional too.
7. Distracting Accessories
Be very careful when you choose your accessories. A delicate silk scarf will look nice. A chunky wool scarf wrapped three times around your neck will look ridiculous at work. A simple pair of stud earrings will enhance an outfit; dangly chandelier earrings or over-sized hoops will make people think you are headed to the club. A few rings will look nice; a ring on every finger will be overkill at work. When it comes time to select your office attire, remember less is more.
