John Galliano’s Return To Fashion

John Galliano: Runway - Paris Fashion Week Womenswear Fall/Winter 2012

A goliath of the fashion world who fell from grace after making anti-Semitic remarks in early 2011 is set to make a comeback this season. The talented British designer John Galliano, who has headed leading fashion houses John Galliano, Givenchy and Christian Dior, has been working alongside Oscar de la Renta in the weeks leading up to London fashion week. As far as work placements go, it has to be one of the most high profile positions in the past decade, and is exactly what Galliano needs to immerse himself into the fashion industry one again.

The John Galliano Scandal

The designer’s abrupt dismissal from the fashion world started when he had an outburst of anti-Semitic comments in public whilst sitting in a Parisian cafe. The comments formed part of a series of outrageous outbursts, and as a result he was dismissed as head designer of Christian Dior. The dismissal marked rock bottom of the designer’s downward spiral, fueled by alcohol abuse. He admitted that he was an alcoholic, and that the disease had caused him to do and say terrible things that hurt others, especially those in the Jewish community. Galliano was stripped of his Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, and was ordered to pay a fine of $6,000. In this case, the cloud had a silver lining, as his retreat from the fashion world gave him the space he needed to start his recovery process and heal from alcohol abuse.

His Recovery

According to long time friend de la Renta, in his absence from the fashion world Galliano worked extremely hard on his recovery and is even working closely with the Anti-Defamation League, one of the organizations who openly expressed their outrage over his comments back in 2011. Many individuals in the fashion industry as well as fans will agree that everyone should get a second chance, particularly somebody as talented as Galliano who has contributed so positively and passionately to the fashion world in the past. In any case, after his dismissal, many people doubted that he would be gone forever, and we’re happy to say that these people were correct.

John Galliano’s 2013 Summer Collection

Drawing inspiration from the latest fashion trends, the John Galliano Summer 2013 collection was equestrian themed, and seemed to be embrace steam punk, a retro-futuristic style that has caused quite a stir in fashion circles. We expect to see more from one of fashion’s most talented designers this year.
