The American Dairy Association has spent the last thirty years telling people that they should drink four glasses of milk every day. Many people have taken their advice for many years. However, new evidence shows that dairy may not be as good for us as we used to believe.
Here are some potential risks that you will need to be aware of if you are going to be consuming dairy products.
Calcium Doesn’t Appear to Help Fight Osteoporosis
The dairy industry has constantly told us that we need to drink milk to have strong bones. However, recent evidence has shown that dairy products do not help enhance bone health. Several studies over the past decade found that adults who consume dairy on a daily basis are no less likely to suffer from osteoporosis of other bone problems.
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine recommends that people receive their calcium from other sources instead. Kale, broccoli and almond milk are great sources of calcium that have been found to help improve bone integrity.
Growth Hormones May Cause Cancer
Many people think that they are safer drinking organic milk. However, even organic milk has cancer causing growth hormones. These hormones are produced to help young cows grow. They were not meant for human beings to drink on a regular basis. These growth hormones have been found to dramatically increase the risks of cancer.
High Levels of Fat
Many people don’t stop to think about how much fat is in many dairy products. About half of the calories you consume in a cup of whole milk come from fat. All of the calories in butter come from fat. You can switch to drinking skim or 1% milk, but almost all of the cheeses and butters you eat will have more fat than you should be eating on a regular basis.
Dairy products are the primary source of saturated fats in most people’s diets. People who eat a lot of dairy have been found to be at a higher risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure and other health problems as they get older.
Drugs and Pesticides
Farms are always trying to maximize the amount of milk their cows can produce. Most dairy farmers add a number of hormones to help them produce more. The cows are also highly prone to illness because of the conditions they are subjected to. Farmers will often need to fill their cows full of antibiotics to keep them from getting sicker.
Many cows also eat foods that have been covered in pesticides. These pesticides almost invariably end up in their milk.
These chemicals can contribute to any number of problems, including:
- Reproductive problems
- Cognitive health issues
You can limit some of these concerns by drinking organic milk. However, almost all cows will be exposed to some chemicals in some way or another.
Eating dairy products isn’t nearly as healthy as people once believed it to be. People usually think that they need to use dairy to get their recommended dose of vitamin D and calcium. Fortunately, there are other ways that you can get these nutrients. Sunlight, almond milk and many fruits and vegetables can be much healthier alternatives.
