1. Blue

Beyonce and Jay-Z kicked off the start of 2012 with the much-anticipated and highly-publicized birth of their firstborn daughter, Blue Ivy. 2012 was a popular year for color names with Scarlett, Violet, and Grey also making baby name lists.

2. Katniss

The highly unusual, plant-based name of the heroine from the incredibly popular Hunger Games Trilogy generated a lot of buzz on baby naming sites this year, receiving more views than any other name.

3. Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence

In what is certainly the longest outrageous name of 2012, Uma Thurman, perhaps making up for her own short first name, gave her daughter four middle names.

4. Hashtag

It’s almost unbelievable, and indeed news sources have yet to confirm that this was anything more than a publicity stunt, but parents of baby Hashtag Jameson announced the name via Facebook this year.

5. Zamzam

It sounds more like a cartoon character, but London Olympics inspired name Zamzam is the given name of Somali athlete Zamzam Mohamed Farah. She didn’t win any medals but won the affection of many viewers with her steadfast recognition of the holy fast of Ramadan and proud representation of war-torn Somalia.

6. Maxwell

It might be more fit for a male superhero but that didn’t stop Maxwell from being the choice of the year for the female infants of celebrities. Songstress Jessica Simpson named her daughter Maxwell Drew and actress Lindsay Sloane used Maxwell Lee for her baby girl.

7. Beretta

Bristol Palin’s daughter will bear the impossibly tough and gentle combination of Breeze Beretta.

8. Kingsolomon

You don’t have to be royal to have a royally inspired name. The name Kingsolomon adorned the birth certificates of five baby boys born in 2012.

9. Vanellope

Disney writers must have had flavors on the brain when they named the latest Disney princess in the popular film “Wreck-It-Ralph.”

10. Mykale, Linzi, Payzlee

Unique spellings continue to turn common names into outrageous additions every year and 2012 was no exception with these unusual takes on traditional classics.

11. Sabbath

Rockers are known for their outrageous antics, and that includes baby names as well. Rock-n-roller Zakk Wylde named 2012 born daughter Sabbath Page Wielandt Wylde and not in honor of the holy day but rather admired rock legends like Black Sabbath front man Ozzy Osborne and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.

12. Kick

Anything goes for middle names in 2012 and that includes action verbs. Actor Jeremy Sisto gave son Bastian Kick a “kickin’” middle name this year.
