Banking Green: Tips for Safely Banking Online

One of the major concerns of our society today is the environment.  From deforestation to climate change, there are many issues that need to be addressed, and many individuals and organizations are working hard to do their part in creating solutions to these problems.  Even big businesses and banking institutions are stepping up and changing the ways they operate, from utilizing more recycled materials in their products to allowing people to perform tasks, such as paying bills and checking account balances, online.

If you have not yet gone “green” when it comes to your banking habits, here are just a few reasons why you should.

Advantages of Banking Online

There are many advantages to maintaining your bank account online.  Not only is it more environmentally-friendly to receive your monthly statements over the internet than to receive paper in the mail, which requires the cutting down of trees around the world, but you can easily access whatever information you need about your bank account from any location and at any time of the day or night.  From checking your balance to paying bills and transferring money between accounts, there are so many things you can do online that there is little to no reason to continue using paper checks and spending money on postage.

Some banks offer very sophisticated online banking websites, where you can set up payees to whom you need to pay bills.  When you need to pay a bill, simply click on the payee, tell the computer how much you want to send, and then click through until the process is complete.  This can take less than a minute, which is dramatically faster than needing to write a check, buy postage, and get it in the mail.  In addition, because all of the processing is done online, it can take as little as one day for the payment to reach your recipient, so you do not need to worry at all if you are nearing the deadline for your payment.  Unlike having to worry if your payment makes it to the company in time by mail, when processed online, you are guaranteed the payment will go through promptly.

Make sure you take your banking a step further by notifying all of your credit card issuers that you no longer wish to receive paper statements.  You can then receive all of your statements and other important correspondence via email.  Access the credit card’s website to view the current statement, previous billing statements, and any other information you may need about your account.  Then go to your bank’s website to pay off the bills quickly and easily, or pay directly through the credit card issuer’s website instead.

Things to Keep in Mind

If you do decide to take your billing and banking online, make sure you take the proper security precautions.  Use only your secure home computer, preferably protected by anti-virus and anti-spyware software, when you are performing any kind of banking activity, from checking your balance to paying your bills.
