Have you ever wondered if men also go through some kind of menopause? If you are a married woman in your late forties, you may be asking this because you feel that it’s a little unfair that you’re going through a lot as you go through menopause while your husband is not. Or maybe you know someone, a woman, your mother perhaps, who’s going through hot flushes and mood swings and yet you see that your father is a-okay. If you’re a man and you are reading this, maybe you are wondering and curious if men like you will also go through something like menopause when you reach a certain age. So what do you think?
What Is Menopause and What Happens During Menopause?
Menopause is a condition that women go through as they reach a certain age. Some women experience the early signs of menopause (also called as perimenopause) as early as their late 30’s. For most women, however, menopause comes at a much later age, some when they reach their late 40’s; some in their 50’s, and some a little later.
So what happens when a woman experiences menopause? Well, so many things happen to a woman as she experiences menopause. Top of the list is she ceases to have her monthly period, something that some women welcome with open arms as it means doing away with the hassle of using sanitary pads and tampons and not being able to enjoy outdoor activities and wearing sexy clothes. With the cessation of menstruation, pregnancy becomes a problem of the past. With menopause, however, comes inconveniences and discomforts such as hot flashes, dizziness, irritability, sleeping problems, weigh gain, fatigue, and many others. All these discomforts women experience during perimenopause and menopause because the body is reacting to the hormonal changes happening inside.
Now going back to the main question: do men go through some sort of menopause too?
Medical experts, up until this day, are still debating on the issue. Some health experts are saying yes, men go through some sort of menopause, and these medical experts even refer to the male condition as Andropause. Some health experts disagree, and they are saying that there is not enough evidence that would suggest that men also go through menopause.
However, they all agree than men, as they age, also experience some sort of hormonal imbalance which causes some changes in their bodies. Medical experts agree that as men age, the testosterone level goes down or declines. Testosterone is a male hormone and as it declines, men are reported to experience fatigue, weakness, depression, and some sexual problems.
Well, whether it will be called later on as male menopause or not, it does not really matter much. Suffice it to say that men, too, go through something difficult as they age.
