Commissioning a Work of Art

Sade painting by Dangerous Lee

It can sometimes feel like the world of art is somewhat separated from real life. This impression may form as a result of the fact that leading artworks are often sold for massive amounts of money.

When there are such significant sums involved, it should perhaps come as no surprise to find that many people find that the situation simply feels rather distant. It can be incredibly difficult to find an association between expensive artworks and everyday life.

The separation of art

With this perspective in mind, it can also be noted that many people certainly feel this sense of separation. I’m not suggesting that this is a situation that constantly causes concern, but it’s certainly the case that there is an impact here. It may mean that people see art as being less accessible than it should be.

The association with high costs may also be having an impact. It’s certainly part of the explanation behind the fact that so few people choose to commission original works of art. The idea of having some unique and truly special within your home should certainly be appealing. This is an opportunity to select something that will create a real stir, causing visitors to ponder your artistic choices.

So why is it that so few people appear to take this route? There’s undoubtedly an automatic assumption that it will be expensive and that it is probably, as a result, very firmly out of reach. If you can’t afford an object of this type, then why would you even begin to consider it?

Understanding attitudes

Although this makes a lot of sense, it’s also revealing about attitudes towards works of art. The assumption here is really based on the rather ludicrous sums that are associated with famous paintings and sculptures. Since you wouldn’t be approaching a famous artist, it’s clear that you wouldn’t expect to be paying the same amounts of money.

Instead, it’s far more likely that you might consider someone who is local to you. This does not mean, of course, that you would be ignoring levels of talent. It will be important to you that you should select someone who has the appropriate skills to carry out a good job. You may even have your own ideas in mind about the final piece.

But there are various options available to you. There are a number of online services that enable art buyers to be put in contact with quality artists. The advantage here is that you’ll be able to select from a range of artists, making a choice based on styles of work and the budget that you have available.
If you’re interested in making contact with a specific individual, then an alternative approach might involve contacting artists who are currently in college. These individuals may be highly talented, but won’t yet be commanding high fees.

Addressing the issue of the costs that are associated with commissioning works of art only takes us so far. It ignores the fact that there is also an element of bravery involved here.

You’ll want to understand the options that you have available to you. Fortunately, there are no golden rules when it comes to making such choices. Simply opt for works of art that you like.
