4 Ways to Improve Your Mental Health

There are a lot of selfless people in the world. These individuals think of others first, whether it is their children, their spouse or their parents, but in the process, they neglect to take care of themselves. If you feel that you are becoming lost in the shuffle of everyday life, read on for several tips that can help you turn the attention back to your own needs.

Look at your daily schedule. Identify a period of time during the day where you have a half hour segment of uninterrupted time. Block that off, and make sure that you use it on yourself (and only for yourself!) each day. While you may initially think this step cannot be done, remember that you are important. Other things in your life can be rearranged; however, if you want to improve your level of happiness and your mental health, you have to have some time that is devoted solely to your own pursuits. Commit yourself to this step, and you will be much better for it in the future.

Now that you have some time for your own pursuits, you may be wondering what you should do with it. First, try to discover a new hobby that you are interested in and begin to immerse yourself in it. What you do doesn’t matter as much as the fact that you are happy doing it. If you are having trouble coming up with a hobby, think back to your childhood. What did you enjoy doing? For example, if you liked playing with your army men, consider getting involved in historical reenactments. If you liked playing with dolls, buy an old dollhouse and begin searching for, and restoring, furniture for it. The possibilities are limitless if you take the time to truly think about it.

In addition to your new hobby, you can also use your personal time to go outside and appreciate nature. This can have a calming effect on you and may also help you clear your head and move forward with your day with a new attitude. Try going for a walk on a trail, or just find a beautiful place to go, sit and watch the wildlife. Also, consider developing better sleeping habits. You will feel more refreshed when you get enough sleep.

Finally, think about what you want from life. Establish a few goals, one that is short-term and one that is long-term to work toward. You are more likely to make progress and achieve the things that you want if you have clear goals in mind. In addition to putting the goal in writing, also determine a specific time period that you want to achieve the goal in. It is easy to say that you will start doing something tomorrow or that you have plenty of time to get it done. A time limit places a sense of urgency on your goals and may provide you with the motivation that you need to move forward.

It is not selfish to think about your own needs. You can do more for others when you spend a little time focusing on yourself. Take the information from this article and use it to establish a bit of “you time.”
