How You Can Help in the Battle Against Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a devastating disease that affects the lives of countless women each year. According to the National Cancer Institute, it’s estimated that 226,870 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 39,510 women will lose the battle against breast cancer in 2012. While these numbers are shocking and not easy to fathom, breast cancer is a disease that not only affects those battling it, but a life-threatening illness that deeply touches family members and friends of those battling it. But, you can help in the fight.

October is recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are various events you can participate in and event small things you can do to help in the fight and make a difference in the lives of many.

Join a fundraising activity
All across the nation and all throughout the year, there are various walks, run, bike rides, and other events held to help raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. And, with October right around the corner, there will be several events and activities for you to participate in. Bring your friends, family member, coworkers, neighbors and anyone else you know and participate together. Show your support by wearing breast cancer items such as pink ribbon t-shirts, hats or pins. Whether you decide to join an event that’s held for just a few hours, or decide to join a 3-day activity, you’re helping in the fight against breast cancer and raising awareness.  All of the money collected through these events is donated to help researchers find a cure and ways to prevent the disease. One activity goes a long way.

Donate to an organization
If you can’t make it to a fundraising activity, you can show your support by donating to an organization. Grab together your friends and others and ask around for people to donate. Set up a sign and bucket in your office and let your coworkers know that you’re collecting money in the fight against breast cancer. You can also make donations conveniently online anytime. Every little bit helps.

Educate yourself and others
While participating in charity events and making donations is a great way to show support, you can also help by educating yourself or others. Find an organization, company or group giving a lecture and listen and learn. You can also host one yourself, and ask others to join you. Find a room you can rent or use and set up a presentation informing others about breast cancer. Discuss the seriousness of the illness, how people are affected, and how people can help in the fight.

Breast cancer has affected the lives of many. Show your support in the battle against breast cancer by joining an event, wearing breast cancer items, donating to organization, and educating yourself and others. Every bit of help goes a long way.
