We all know the stories of Charlie Sheen. Success, drug and alcohol abuse. More success, more abuse. Recovery. Rumors. Getting fired. More abuse. More rumors.
Charlie Sheen has been a lesson to all of us in what to avoid. We’ve been able to see what can happen to your life if you allow addiction to overtake it. But he’s also shown us that there is a road back from addiction.
With all of his mistakes and successes, let’s take a look at a few of the things that Charlie Sheen has taught us about addiction:
Money and success don’t buy happiness
Charlie Sheen has been very successful in his career. When he was on Two and a Half Men, he was the highest paid actor on television. He earned $1.8 million per episode! But with all of that money, and with all of that success, he wasn’t immune to addiction. He had a problem, and all of the money and success in the world couldn’t fix it.
Money and success don’t mean happiness or fulfillment. They don’t guarantee immunity to addiction. People from all walks of life are susceptible to addiction. Addictions don’t just come from money stresses, or lack of success. Anyone can develop an addiction, no matter where they are in their lives.
Addiction has its consequences
Charlie Sheen lost everything because of his addictions. He lost his career, a lot of money, opportunities, his family, friends, fans, his sanity etc. He was fired from his job. He lost several marriages. He lost a whole lot of respect. He lost many potential opportunities. This is a common story, happening in the lives of many people struggling with addictions. Lost jobs, families, friends, freedoms, etc are very common with addictions. When addiction takes over our lives, we can lose everything.
People are going to judge
The television and Internet have been flooded with crazy quotes of Charlie Sheen’s, and stories of his downfall. People love drama. It makes them feel better about their own lives. Not everyone is understanding, and many will judge. Charlie Sheen has donated a lot of time and money to charities. But are those the stores we here? No. Charlie’s charitable actions have been overshadowed by his addiction-driven actions.
No matter what we are struggling with, but especially with addictions, there are people around every corner ready to document your mistakes. The trick is not to listen to the negative noise. Listen to those that love you and support you. Not the ones that find joy in your heartache.
There are opportunities waiting after recovery
Charlie Sheen really did lose everything because of his addictions. But, when he had become clean, he was offered other opportunities. People were willing to forgive. People were willing to take a risk on him and offer him new opportunities.
You can never fully get back everything you’ve lost due to an addiction. Some things that are lost (relationships, opportunities, jobs, homes, etc) you may never be able to recover. But, once you’ve put the work in for recovery, some people will be willing to forgive. Some people will be willing to take a chance on you. Your life isn’t over. If you put in the work to recover, there is hope in the end.
Conclusion
No one can say what the future holds for Charlie Sheen. Even after his most recent “recovery,” we are still seeing videos and articles of him seemingly under the influence. But it doesn’t matter what others say or think. Charlie is the only one who knows where he stands on his road to recovery.
Luckily, we don’t have to follow Charlie’s example. We can choose our own road to recovery. Just because he looks like he may still be struggling, you can work to overcome. You don’t have to lose all he lost. You don’t have to have the same regrets. No matter where you are in your addiction and your path to recovery, you can decide to change now. Your path doesn’t have to be his path; your story doesn’t have to be his story. Write your own story. Start on your path to recovery, with your own successes.
