Couture collections aren’t the only items sparking fashion trends at the 2012 Mercedez Benz Fashion Week in NY. The best nail art ideas were being swapped left, right and center as runway models paraded fabulous dress designs and new nail polish styles. Originally a niche activity that has been mainstreamed, this popular display of DIY artistry continues to evolve as it comes out with increasingly intricate styles.
- Time Machine Manis: A psychedelic nail art idea for fans of Austin Powers, these nails were first spotted backstage at Nicole Miller during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Choose bold shades for starters, and then create the swirls, starting from the center of your nail, with a toothpick. Do not attempt if you don’t have a lot of patience.
- Pretty Flowers: The hand-printed nail flowers at Rachel Antonoff’s show were the highlight in many ways. A beautiful contribution to DIY fundis looking for new nail art ideas, you can copy this look starting with two coats of CND’s Flashpoint. Use a detailing brush and paint a fern-like design, starting just above your cuticle, with Anchor Blue and Brilliant White. And Voila!
- Double Reverse French: Nude nails are always in vogue come fall, which is why Haven Spa’s nail team have hit the nail art jackpot with their double reverse French. Combining nude nails with two identical stripes in different colors across the tips, this isn’t as easy as it may seem. Haven creative, Anne Lazovik, suggests painting a wide stripe first and then layering a thinner stripe on the edge.
- Biker Chick: Try something very different with this cutting-edge nail art idea. A difficult design by CND for Blonds, these custom tips took 130 hours to complete. A “biker babe” manicure complete with glitter crystals, leather, and some crushed glass for kicks, this Fashion Week creation could inspire a variety of different spin-off looks. Hit up the craft store and start painting – at your own risk.
These not-so-simple nail art ideas and styles are courtesy of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Instead of the usual backstage beauty chaos of glitter powder, flying hair extensions and row upon row of acrylic press on nails, a lot of the nails were done by hand. The results, as can be seen above, were not only original – they’re attainable. Kit up today and try applying these ideas with your very own nail art!
