One of the best ways to keep yourself safe from attack is to use a little bit of common sense. Victims are more likely going to get assaulted in certain places than others and staying safe is often a matter of considering the statistics. Avoid these spots when you’re alone and you’ll go a long way towards keeping yourself safe. If you can’t avoid visiting these areas, make sure to take steps to keep yourself safe.
Empty Parking Lots
Predators often choose nearly-empty parking lots and parking garages to make their assault. If a parking lot is empty, it is unlikely to have any traffic. And if it is dark, they can make their assault relatively unnoticed.
If you have to head to your car at night, have someone walk you or drive you to your car. Have them wait until you are inside the car and driving away before they leave. If you have to walk to your car alone, carry an air horn with you. Honk it a few times to draw attention to yourself and deter anyone who may want to approach you.
Predators often lay in wait in infrequently used public restrooms like those in parks or at gas stations. To protect yourself from assault, avoid public bathrooms unless it is daylight and there is a fair amount of traffic. If you must visit an empty bathroom at night, bring a partner with you.
Assaults often take place on jogging trails after dark and sometimes in broad daylight. Predators often wait in wooded or covered areas near out-of-the-way bends in trails where joggers are isolated. To stay safe when jogging, take along a large dog, stick, partner or anything that would make you look like an unlikely victim.
Public parks are often the scenes of assault. Attacks most often happen at night to victims who are walking alone, usually taking a short cut home. Because there are few street lights and plenty of shaded areas in public parks, predators favor them.
You should never go into a dark park at night when you are alone. Even with a partner, it is best to avoid dark places with plenty of cover. Go around the park if at all possible. If you cannot avoid travelling through a park on a regular basis, carry some form of protection with you.
Whenever you are somewhere where many people are drinking or doing drugs, your chances of assault increase slightly. Take care when going into bathrooms, parking lots and isolated places. This goes double if you’ve been drinking and your decision making skills are compromised. Whenever you’re intoxicated, always keep a buddy or buddies with you.
