Game of Thrones Inspires Helmut Lang Collections

HBO’s Game of Thrones is based on the epic novels written by George R. R. Martin. A series that has become widely popular because of its impressive cast, costly visual prowess, and intricate storyline, the fantasy TV show has now inspired a fashion collection.

If you’re wondering who was able to take the medieval themed apparel of Game of Thrones and make it contemporary, the answer is Helmut Lang. Embodying the theme of power and beauty that is entrenched in every thread of each hour long episode, the fashion brand first decided to emulate the show in their Fall 2012 collection.

The clothing is meant to represent a mixture of the forest life and stark minimal world in which the characters live, hence the hard and soft fabrics, and the tree-bark printed leather. Certainly not ‘body-conscious,’ Helmut and Lang have gone for a more textured look in these designs.

Highlights of the line included pieces that were designed to mimic clothes worn by the fictitious Westeros nobles. Now, admirers of Game of Thrones will be able to walk around like their favorite characters (without it being Halloween). From sweaters that convey body armor, to fauna-printed pants and dresses, the designers have gone all out to create a understated look. As the saying by Queen Cercis goes “power is power.” Well power is certainly captured in Helmut and Lang’s signature downtown look and, more recently, their 2013 footwear.

Who knew that the Rangers of the Night’s Watch were so on trend?

Moving on from couture to shoes, even the fashion-forward footwear in Game of Thrones got Helmut and Lang’s creative juices flowing. Made from goat and calf suede (naturally), the boots are meant to be striking representatives of the magical forest. Jon Snow fans will be eager to get their hands on a pair of these burnished booties, which costing up to $740 dollars apiece. The styles will only be available in store next year in stingray, rubbed suede, and blood-splattered prints. If that’s too far away for your liking, the shoe collection will also be made available online for purchase on August the 2nd.

Martin’s as an author is one of those gems that don’t come around often. Now that Game of Thrones has arrived in HD, it’s thrilling to see the impact it’s having on popular culture. Fashionable in every sense of the word and ready to be worn by the general public, Helmut and Lang have proven themselves to be innovative once again.
