When most men think of skin care, what comes to mind is the plethora of women’s products designed to maintain a young and vibrant appearance. What may be of great surprise is that many males are now becoming aware that they, as well, can reap the benefits of certain treatments and techniques previously designed for the opposite gender. With a handful of easy-to-follow guidelines men can take advantage of some of the methods women have been using for decades.
Facial Cleansing
This is perhaps the most important tool any man can have in order to help guarantee clear and youthful skin. Most men spend less than thirty seconds each morning washing their face; the routine may simply amount to splashing a few handfuls of water in haste before heading off to work. This is not nearly enough to wash away the buildup of oils, germs, and dirt which can accumulate daily. A good pH-hbalanced cleanser is easy to apply and cost effective. It should be massaged in for approximately one minute and then followed up by a moisturiser to maintain pliability and to avoid the skin drying out.
Spend Time on a Face Mask
These clay-based masks do an exceptional job in freeing up clogged pores which are one of the main reasons for acne, even in adults. Once applied, the mask should be allowed to dry for the time recommended and then immediately followed up by an exfoliator which helps remove any dead skin cells. Each and every day our skin sheds a certain amount of these cells and by removing them, the live skin can absorb all the oxygen and other nutrients it needs.
Avoid Smoking
Amongst numerous other negative effects, smoking also damages the skin by blocking the absorption of many vitamins. Also, the chemicals in cigarette smoke can also clog pores. By abstaining from smoking, a man’s skin can retain a healthful hue and youthful appearance.
Drink Plenty of Water
Although most men know the benefits of hydration while in the gym or on the job site, many do not realize that proper hydration also gives the skin elasticity and helps cleanse the body of built up impurities. Along these same lines, avoid alcohol when possible; as not only does it dehydrate the body and therefore the skin, but it also hinders the liver’s ability to remove any toxins which are naturally absorbed through foods and the environment.
Exercise
By exercising for at least thirty minutes a day, circulation is increased and sweating removes additional toxins which may have built up. It is also proven that physical activity helps the skin maintain its elasticity and has many age-defying properties; both inside and out.
These are but a few important factors which can help men maintain a youthful, healthy appearance. Gone are the days when such recommendations were solely designed for women. Although the “rough and rugged” appearance may still appeal to some men, many are now choosing to look and feel younger.
