Many celebrities have recently been seen wearing feather hair extensions; most notably Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez who started the craze off last year, adding to the increased demand and hysteria surrounding the rooster feather accessory.
This is in addition to the recent increase in exposure on television – American Idol and through celebrity magazines has seen the craze spread internationally with everyone hoping to get their hands on these unique hair accessories.
The ease of attaching and maintaining the feathers when applied to the hair means that these are very durable and secure. The feathers are natural therefore they can be blow-dried, flat-ironed, straightened, even used for swimming, therefore because there is little need for maintaining the hair pieces, therefore increasing the appeal of this new product.
Before celebrities started using the accessory as a hairpiece, the rooster feathers had a single use for fly fishermen, who attach the feathers to the end of their rods and use this as bait to catch fish. However, not everyone is thrilled with the craze, animal rights activist have begun to voice their concerns over the increased trends, as the roosters providing the luxury well-thought of products are killed in as a result. Again, this is part of the reason why demand has been so difficult to supply, as the rooster can take up to 18 months to develop the right feathered colours before they are deemed to be suitable for sell.
A lot of fishermen have recently become disgruntled with the lower levels of stock and increasing prices for feathers. The price for a pack of feathers can be about, however the price in a salon can sell from £15-£30, thus bringing through considerable mark up for the salon companies. This mark-up has seen stocks flying off the shelves in fishing stores around the world. Salons quick to the market trends have been scooping up any box they can get their hands on, with the knowledge that the luxury feathers will sell and sell very fast.
No matter how angry the fly-fisherman and animal activists get nothing can slow the demand of modern day celebrity hysteria, as long as the most popular American celebrities are seen sporting the latest feathered accessory, the rest of the world will follow. Make sure that if you do decide to join in with this ever growing fashion style, get your feather hair extensions from a reputable source.
