Getting ready for a first date is indeed a perilous and anxiety-ridden task.
You have a thousand questions and concerns running through your head. ‘Does he like me?’ ‘Will he kiss me?’ ‘Do I have to pay my half?’ ‘What should I wear?’ ‘Will he show up?’
‘What if I spill my food down my front, which attracts a flock of hungry pigeons who then land on me in a feeding frenzy and I’m left covered in pigeon crap and feathers?’
First dates are a minefield.
They can also be incredibly enjoyable evenings where you meet and spend time with someone new, ascertain whether this is someone you would like to spend more time with, and you even learn more about yourself in the process.
Oh hell, who am I kidding? A first date is just an audition for a part in the no-pants dance whilst also being a diversion from the inevitable cries of ‘I don’t want to die alone’ you have running through your head all day.
For us ladies, make-up plays a big part in the first date ritual. Most first-date-make-up-how-to guides run along the lines of ‘wear natural shade foundation, go easy on the black eyeliner, don’t wear too much lipstick (this may put him off kissing you, shock horror) and keep the tones as natural as possible.
How about scratch all of that and actually have fun putting your date make-up on?
If you’re an alternative kind of lady anyway, why would you suddenly wear all those boring shades and lip-gloss only to confuse him later with your real make-up style?
I say, dare to be different. Go for bright colors, glitter, neon and heavy lines!
If he can’t handle that, he ain’t worth your time.
So, begin with a nice light layer of foundation or bronzer, whatever you’re comfortable with. I tend to go for bronzer as it does the job in covering blemishes, gives me a natural-looking tanned face and doesn’t feel caked on.
Then turn your attention to your eyelids. If you would like to coordinate the color of your eye shadow with your clothes, by all means do so. Even if you are wear neon pink.
I love glitter eye shadow on dates. It’s fun to put on, fun to bat your eyelashes and give him a sparkle and brightens up your eyes completely.

Personally I tend to wear pretty heavy eye make-up. It’s my thing.
I would never dream of not being myself on a date, because what’s the point in that? It would be a lie from start to finish and if he liked what he saw, he would be falling for an optical illusion.
Heavy black eyeliner and thick black mascara isn’t for everybody but I would certainly recommend trying just a fine line of black under your eyes. You’d be surprised how cat eyes can make you feel like a total vixen and increase your confidence.
Same goes for the lips. Some girls suit lipstick, some girls suit lip gloss. Do NOT neglect your lips if you feel you suit neither.
Try each one out. Go for different colors and textures (shiny, sheen or matte). Pick your favorite and go with it.
And why on earth shouldn’t you dye your hair for the occasion? If you sporadically dye your hair purple because you love how it looks on you, do it for your date!
You want to feel your best and when you feel your best, you look your best. So if glitter eye shadow, neon hair dye and cat like eye make-up makes you feel like the Queen of the world, then go for it. The lucky chap will be glad to be along for the ride.
