The Best Hairstyles of 2012

Each year new trends emerge among the population, and hairstyles are certainly no exception. The way a person wears their hair helps to define who they are, what they do and whether they are up to the minute with fashion. Even a modern and trendy outfit can look out of style when paired with an outdated hairdo. In many cases, trends follow those celebrities, actors and models in the limelight. As 2011 ends and 2012 begin, it is clear that some hair trends are here to stay for the coming year. Here are some of the more popular hairstyles for 2012, both for men and women.

The Retro Updo: This hairstyle was seen frequently on the red carpet in 2011, and will likely continue to be seen in 2012. It is becoming more and more popular among teenagers for everyday wear and small size shoes, as well as adult women for formal or special occasions. The up do is created by using large hot rollers or a wide curler to create flowing curls. Then, the curls will be situated on the top of the head and secured with bobby pins and plenty of hairspray. The look is a throwback to eras like the 1930s and 1940s, and looks especially great when paired with a retro outfit and a cost of red lipstick to add interest.

The Temp Fade: While the retro up do is all about classic beauty, the temp fade is a hairstyle that embraces all that is modern. Known as one of the more popular scene haircuts, this is more popular among women but can be seen in young men as well. To achieve the temp fade, hair must be parted to one side rather than in the middle. Then, the other half is shaved off or buzzed to be very short. While very trendy and likely to be a hit in many urban areas in 2012, this hairstyle takes commitment and confidence to pull off successfully. Celebrities like Rihanna have flaunted the trendy hairstyle with great results.

Pixie Cuts: Traditionally, it has been older women who cut their hair short, while younger women embrace the longer locks. However, it looks as though 2012 will bring in an influx of women of all ages who are confident enough to carry off the short haired look. Pixie cuts are the preferred hairstyle of choice when it comes to short hair. Thanks to celebrities like Emma Watson and Ashlee Simpson who manage to look both beautiful and trendy with their short hair, many young women are quickly following suit.

The Wet Look: This hairstyle has been seen on runways near the end of 2011, and celebrities have embraced the easy to recreate hairstyle on the red carpet and for everyday occasions. To create the wet look hairstyle, simply lather plenty of gel or foam that will give the hair a permanently wet look. Then, slick back the hair using a narrow comb or hairbrush and let dry in that position. It is popular not just because of the simplicity, but because it is a great way to transition from poolside or gym activities into more formal attire at night.

Each of these hairstyles is sure to be a hit in 2012. Whether you choose to rock the pixie cut, the wet look, the temp fade or the retro up do, you will look trendy in the coming year.
