In the world of celebrity you can become famous for pretty much anything. Whether it’s a genuine talent like acting or singing, or something as simple as being someone’s wife. Most people who find fame and fortune tend to be content in that way of life as long as it continues to earn them a pretty penny. However, there are some celebs out there for whom one highly successful career isn’t enough. Many of those who turn from celebrity end up being designers as it’s a career that is definitely much easier to launch if you’ve already got some profile. Here are some of the celebs who made the grade.
Probably one of the most recognisable success stories in the celeb-turned designer world, good old Posh Spice morphed a highly successful pop career with the Spice Girls into considerable fashion advantage when she gave up looking like a footballer’s wife and started dressing like a fashionista. When, in 2008, after ventures into denim, perfumes and jewellery, VB launched her own fashion label, there was some considerable snickering among the fashion elite. However, Mrs B has certainly had the last laugh as her collections have been flying off the shelves and in 2011 she was presented with the ‘Designer of the Year’ award at the British Fashion Awards.
There were several years when it may have been difficult to work out what exactly it was that Sadie Frost did other than appear in a few films, be married to Jude Law and party with Kate Moss. However, in 1999 Frost launched her own fashion label FrostFrench, with friend Jemima French, starting out with a lingerie collection and then expanding into a clothing range. The label’s success has been considerable and has meant that the business now has customers across the world from the UK to the US and Japan. Although the company went into administration in 2008, it was saved by a consortium of investors and has gone from strength to strength ever since – so much so that Frost has even had the time to get back into some acting.
He’s always made it clear that fashion is one of his passions but it’s only been in the past year that Kanye Omari West has taken his own tentative steps into being a designer in his own right. The debut collection for his label DW (named after his late mother Donda West), received mixed reviews at Paris Fashion Week in October 2011 and there were accusations that the rapper didn’t have nearly enough fashion experience to set up a label and better not give up his day job. However, West hit back via Twitter stating he’d done work experience at Fendi and Giuseppe Zanotti before launching the collection, as well as being under contract to Louis Vuitton to design shoes. Any fashion fans keen to get their mitts on the footwear fruits of Kanye’s labours should head to Louis Vuitton to see his latest collection of kicks (if you’ve got upwards of £500 to burn on trainers…)
Of course what else could one of the most famous faces in the fashion world turn to when modelling started to become a little dry other than launching her own fashion line. Being great pals with fashion magnate Philip Green, Moss launched her collection at high street giant Topshop in 2007 and her pieces remained hugely popular during the three year design deal. Since then she has gone on to design a range of handbags for Longchamp, which also sold with some considerable success.
Whilst some celebrities might be content to take their five minutes of fame and live comfortably off the earnings, others seem to have genuine passions that are motivated by more than just the desire to be papped and to make lots of cash. These famous celebrities turned designers are just a few who have made a successful transition and are a testament to the success that can be achieved if you ‘never rest on your laurels’…
