Movie Review: Chronicle

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, you need to. It’s a very good movie. I’ll admit that when I saw the previews, I thought it looked like it was going to be the same thing as the 2009 movie “Push”. However, I gave it a chance and was very happy with the outcome. If you’re still worried that it’s the same thing as “Push”, It’s not and I think anybody who enjoyed that movie will definitely enjoy this one.

“Chronicle” is about three High School kids who stumble across a strange object in the woods, which leads them to gain telekinetic abilities. They begin to realize that their powers grow with use and they have to make a deal not to use their powers on any living creature. That becomes the difficult part.

I think we are so used to seeing super heroes with super powers. What happens though when regular people like us have that power? That’s what makes this movie so interesting. They begin using these powers to play pranks on people. No harm in that right? It then becomes a means to gain popularity. The main character Andrew, played by actor Dane Dehaan, is unpopular. He is able to use his powers to gain popularity and then becomes center of attention. However, that only lasts so long.

If you enjoy super powers and what people can do with those powers, you will really like this movie. If you enjoy super powers with a good story, you will like this movie even more. It’s a well written, well directed movie that will grab everybody’s attention. What could make this film difficult to watch is the “shaky cam” effect used at the beginning of the film. Some people like it, others do not. If you can be patient and wait out the first little part of the film, you will be just fine. It quickly ends and becomes like any other film.

The pacing of the movie is great. It starts off slow and speeds up quickly. The acting isn’t amazing but it doesn’t need to be. They feel like real people and that makes it work for this movie. It’s another one of those movies that makes you wonder what you would do if this happened to you. How would you handle going from a normal person to somebody with super powers? It can’t be easy and this movie shows why that is.

Chronicle is worth seeing. You won’t be disappointed.
