For most women, choosing handbags is not a matter of choosing a single bag that is right for them, it is a matter of choosing several nice bags to serve them well for everyday use and then choosing a few more special pieces that are appropriate for the special outfits, occasions and events of their lives.

A woman’s wardrobe can always include a few more carefully chosen bags, but too many women get stuck with bags they cannot use or are not comfortable carrying simply because they looked great in a store or on a website. 

Here are the four most common types of bags and some information about when each is the right choice:

1. Totes

Large totes are the best choice when carry lots of belongings is essential, like when a change of shoes needs to be concealed. They are also good for long days out when being prepared for whatever happens is essential.

Totes are not all alike, however. While they can be flimsy and made of canvas, they can also be elegant and made of leather. They may or may not have inner pockets, and they may close with a drawstring, a zip, a few snaps or they may not close at all.

2. Shoulder bags. 

Shoulder bags rest comfortably on the shoulder, keeping hands free for other matters. They are large and can have almost as much room as a tote. They are also the most common type of bag.

With adjustable straps in many cases and plenty of interior pockets, they are available in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and looks. It is no wonder they are often considered the workhorses of a handbag collection. 

3. Satchels. 

Satchels are available in a number of sizes and are great daily bags for many women who want an alternative to the shoulder bag. They have two handles and often have roomy square-shaped interiors. There is plenty of space for necessities, but fitting in extra shoes or an array of accessories may be a challenge.

Satchels will often fit over the shoulder when necessary, although sometimes just barely. They also rest comfortably in the crook of an arm.

4. Evening bags.

Evening bags are frequently carried more for style than for substance. Often designed as clutches or to be worn on a wrist with single small strap, these bags are usually highly detailed but have room only for the essentials. 

In addition to being made from the finest leather and other materials, they often include metallic embellishments, fringes and other elements included only for decoration. Elegance is key for an evening bag whilst function is more critical for all other types of bags.

Nearly every woman needs at least one of each type of bag, but the most fashion-conscious buyers will insist on having a coordinated bag for every outfit. With plenty of styles in every type available both in stores and online, women who like to shop will never run out of beautiful, elegant and useful handbags from which to choose.
